10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wranglers crush Terrell to move to 2-0

Published: Saturday, December 15, 2012 12:31 AM CST
West Mesquite's game against Terrell on Friday looked like a mismatch on paper.

It was even worse on the court.

The Wranglers overwhelmed the Tigers from the very start as they rolled to a 102-23 victory.

West Mesquite improves to 2-0 in 10-4A play and is tied for first place with both Highland Park and Carrollton Newman Smith.

The Wranglers opened a 15-point lead in the first quarter and then embarked on one of the most dominant eight-minute stretches of any local team this season.

West Mesquite outscored Terrell 38-3 in the second quarter to take a 60-10 lead into halftime.

It was more of the same in the second half, as the Wranglers outscored the Tigers 42-13 to complete the blowout win.

Eight different players scored at least eight points, with four in double figures. Claudia Price led the way with 22 points, Alexus Bertrand scored 16 and Tamia Cunigan and Jazmyne Walker each added 15.

Poteet was not as fortunate on Friday, as it dropped to 0-2 with a 54-51 loss to Forney. The Pirates got off to a strong start in building a 16-7 lead and still led by six heading to the fourth quarter but were outscored 21-12 down the stretch.

Poteet is one of three teams still searcing for its first 15-4A win, joining Carrollon Creekview and Terrell as they enter into a district-wide bye on Tuesday.
