TopGolf to top Allen location, plans to break ground this month

Published: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 11:36 AM CST
From stucco to stone, TopGolf will bring elegance to a competitive golf-inspired game with plans to break ground on a new location in The Colony next month.

The Colony City Council made the final judgment on proposed TopGolf plans to construct a three-story, 64,100-square-foot recreational facility that will be located at the southeast corner of Memorial Drive and Blair Oaks Drive.

The proposed facility will boast 102 tee areas, a retail area for the pro shop and a restaurant. The undeveloped site is a 12.88-acre plot. Site improvements include extensive landscaping, golf range screening and the construction of a new 10-foot-wide hike and bike trail along Memorial Drive as well as a water feature on the northeast corner of the site.

City Manager Troy Powell said the city is making strides with the addition of the Nebraska Furniture Mart and TopGolf. In just a very short period of time, he said, the city has brought in two significant corporate partners.

"We are extremely excited to have TopGolf choose The Colony for their newest location," Powell said. "TopGolf is a state-of-the-art entertainment and sporting venue and will be a tremendous asset to our community."

For residents concerned about giant lights aiming at their kitchen windows, fret not.

Mike Joyce, planning director for the project, said the lights, which proved to be controversial at the Allen location, will not be a problem for residents of The Colony.

"We only have four property owners located within 200 feet of the property, and the closest residence is about a quarter-mile away," he said. "We are very happy with the location that we have."

Traffic is already being looked at thanks to Councilman Jeff Connolly, who suggested getting the early start to prevent drivers from exiting state Highway 121 and jumping three lanes over to make the turn into the facility.

Looking for a TopGolf cheat sheet? Think baseball meets golf: an outfield filled with giant targets like a dartboard, testing each golfer's ability to hit it hard and hit it far.

Each TopGolf ball has a small microchip inside that tells golfers how far and how accurate shots are, up to 240 yards. The closer the ball lands to the center of the target, the more points acquired. For those who get a little frustrated by missing the mark, take a break and grab a beer or a bite to eat.
