A lot of fight: Boyd girls surge late, but fall to John Paul II

Published: Friday, November 30, 2012 11:27 PM CST
MCKINNEY -- The Boyd girls basketball team put together an impressive late surge against John Paul II at home Friday night, but their early mistakes doomed them to a 48-45 loss.

"We played hard, but missed some opportunities to get the victory," said Rochelle Vaughn, Boyd head coach. "We have to play smarter and execute better, but I'm proud of the way we played and the effort we gave. We could've folded, but we didn't, we came back."

Julia Hendrieth led the Lady Broncos with 17 points, followed by Micaela Gonzalez, who had nine and Haley Carruthers, who had eight.

The loss was Boyd's second in as many games in the Collin County Roundball Classic. The Lady Broncos (6-6) began the tournament Thursday with a 73-24 loss to Duncanville.

After trailing John Paul 43-29 through the first three quarters, Boyd put together an impressive run in the final frame.

"We picked it up there, went on that run, and started believing in ourselves," Vaughn said. "That's a positive sign for us, that we're getting better, which will help us in January when district starts. Hopefully we can build off this and get some more confidence and keep improving."

The Lady Broncos outscored the Lady Cardinals 14-2 to start the fourth quarter. That run cut the Lady Cardinals lead to just two at 45-43 with less than two minutes remaining. John Paul, though, would hold on for the win.

Vaughn was especially proud of the play she got from forwards Hendrieth and Jordan Brightwell, as well as guards Mariah Richardson and Courtney Norman.

"Julia played well for us, so did Jordan, she played great," Vaughn said. "And Mariah and Courtney gave us a good spark off the bench."

The Lady Broncos played well to start, holding a 13-10 lead in the first quarter before the Lady Cardinals came roaring back, as they held a 29-23 lead at the half, which they would fail to give up the rest of the way.

"It was close, we were winning in the first quarter," Vaughn said. "In the second quarter we didn't make a lot of shots and missed some free throws and that hurt us."

While it may have come too late, what cannot be denied is the quick, dominant transition the Lady Broncos made in the fourth quarter.

"We started moving better on defense," Vaughn said. "We started moving together and working as a team. Instead of one person doing their own thing we had five girls on the same page dedicated to doing what we asked them to do."

In addition to their defensive adjustments, the Lady Broncos capitalized offensively on several mismatches that played into their favor.

"We got smarter on offense and started going to the right people who had the advantage on offense," Vaughn said. "We went to Julia, because she had a mismatch, and we went to Haley, because she had a mismatch, too."

Overall, Vaughn is encouraged by what she saw Friday night, especially given that every game Boyd plays brings the team closer to its district opener against Plano West just a little more than a month from now on Jan. 4.

"We're getting better, which is a good sign," she said. "We could have given up, but we didn't. We came back and I'm proud of that. I like our fight, we gave ourselves a chance to win and that's all you can ask for."
