Sunnyvale quintet receives top honors on all-district volleyball team

The goals for the Sunnyvale athletic program are not just about the present.
Of course the Raiders want to be successful now, but as one of the youngest programs in the area, they are also laying the groundwork for the future.
The Sunnyvale volleyball program is among those that are on the right path.
This past season, a senior-laden group posted a 24-15 record and advanced to the area round of the playoffs before falling to eventual state champion Brock.
This group of seniors has been a part of four straight playoff teams, an achievement that will last far beyond this year.
"Our goal as a program is to keep moving forward," Sunnyvale head coach Nicholas Gay said. "We feel like we are doing that but we want to be one of those teams like Brock that is right there every year. We think we are headed in that direction and this group has been a big part of that."
Sunnyvale recently had five players make the 12-2A all-district volleyball team. Four of those were seniors.
Senior Abby Whitehead was named hitter of the year. Whitehead, a former district MVP, was also named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 2A all-state first team.
Alex Lally was named setter of the year while Delanee Clark was honored as blocker of the year. Two other players were named to the first team in senior Caila Sims and junior Whitney Matous.
Sunnyvale girls down Commerce
The Sunnyvale girls basketball team improved to 7-3 on the season with a 41-31 victory over Commerce on Tuesday.
The Raiders took control in the first half, racing to a 25-14 lead and then held off Commerce the rest of the way.
Sheridan Lewis had 12 points while Caila Sims and Grace Goodbart had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Raiders will compete in the Brownsboro Tournament today through Saturday and then play at Caddo Mills on Tuesday.
Raider boys fall to Pinkston
Sunnyvale got off to a slow start and never recovered on Tuesday in a 60-50 loss to Pinkston.
The Raiders were down by four after one quarter but then were outscored 21-12 in the second to fall into a 34-21 hole.
Sunnyvale tried to make a run in the fourth quarter but it fell well short.
Thomas Wendt had 20 points to lead the Raiders while Stephen Kirven added 16 points and Josh Quinn added 12.
Sunnyvale will hit the road on Tuesday to play Life School Red Oak.
