Third is the word: Big quarter leads West past Sachse, 61-49

Published: Friday, December 14, 2012 11:48 PM CST
Sachse boys basketball has followed the same mantra all season.

"We always talk about the three bodies," said Dwight Williams, Sachse head coach. "Everybody put a body on somebody ... and we didn't do that tonight."

The inability to do so was one of many problems Sachse ran into during the third quarter of Friday's game against Plano West (8-7). The Wolves took advantage with a 15-6 frame that turned a tight game at the half into an eventual 61-49 victory.

Sachse's issues in the third were two-fold with one field goal and seven turnovers.

"We had no ball swings," Williams said. "We would pass the ball and then it just stopped; you have to move the ball around, you have to make the defense work."

The Mustangs' lone basket came from senior Chance Bailey and made it 32-27. West went on an 8-2 run from there with the cap coming off a steal by junior Tre Anderson that led to a layup by junior Clark Lee for a 40-29 advantage. That wouldn't be the only time Anderson, who put up 10 points and five boards, made a big defense play. He also buried a 3-pointer and then made a steal early in the fourth that led to a dunk from sophomore DJ Hogg and a 50-32 West lead during a 10-1 Wolves' spurt.

"We came out of halftime stressing that we had to play better defense," said Anthony Morgan, West head coach. "We needed to play lockdown defense to get our offense going and I think Tre was one of those guys that really got it done for us."

He wasn't alone.

Sophomore Waseem Limbada, who scored eight points, made 3-pointers during both West's second-half surges, the latter of which led to a game-high 59-39 advantage.

"[Limbada] is a shooter," Morgan said. "He is an instant spark for us."

West got its spark from a different source to start the game as the Wolves held a 10-8 lead with eight of those points coming from senior AJ Lozano, who had a four-point play and finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

"AJ was huge for us in the first quarter," Morgan said, "then Sachse really started to focus in on him."

In addition to the play of Lozano, West was able to establish a 16-10 lead at the end of the first behind the exploits of Hogg and senior Devron Kennedy. Hogg struggled from the field early, but cleaned up the glass with a game-high 10 boards. He also scored 11 points while Kennedy registered eight points and five rebounds.

"We were really able to control the boards early," Morgan said, "before we got into some foul trouble."

Sachse pushed back in the second.

"I thought we moved the ball real well in the second quarter," Williams said, "and were able to get a lot of open shots because of it."

Leading the way for the Mustangs were junior Michael Olivares, who posted a reverse putback and-1 as part of his eight-point and five-rebound output, and junior Marcus Hubbard, who scored both his baskets in back-to-back fashion to give Sachse a 25-23 lead.

The Mustangs wouldn't lead again though as a 3-pointer from Lee, who had five points, gave the Wolves a 28-25 edge at the break. That advantage swelled to as many as 20 points in the fourth before Sachse closed on a 10-2 surge that included a pair of 3-pointers from senior Jake Gross, who led his team with 12 points.

The Mustangs got four points from junior Marlo Johnson and sophomore Michael Douglas in the 61-49 loss. Sachse hosts Rowlett at 7:30 p.m. Friday to open district.

West's non-district slate continues at the same time when hosting Coppell.

"We are still a young team so there have been some hiccups that were to be expected," Morgan said. "But I really like where we're at."
