William C. "Bill" Dowdy Jr., 87, of McKinney, Texas, passed away December 24, 2012, in McKinney.
Bill was born February 27, 1925, in McKinney, Texas.After graduating from high school in McKinney, Bill attended North Texas Agriculture College (now UTA) in Arlington. His education was interrupted when he was called to military service during WWII. As an artillery forward observer in the Philippines, he served in Leyte, Luzon, Bataan, Corregidor, Mindoro and Mindanao. Later he was with the occupation army in Japan.
Bill was also a former member of the Executive Committee of the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel and the Southwestern Regional Vice President of that organization.
Bill had been active in civic affairs, serving on the Historic Preservation Advisory Board from 1989-1995, the last two years as chairman. He was also a member of the McKinney Alliance Board, past president of the Kiwanis Club of McKinney, past president of the Community Concert Association, past board member of the American Red Cross, a volunteer at the McKinney Food Pantry, and was voted the 2000 Outstanding Citizen by the McKinney Chamber of Commerce.
Bill was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church of McKinney where he served as an elder. In addition, he served on the Advisory Board of the Heritage Guild of Collin County, McKinney Education Foundation Board, and was president of the Scott Cemetery Association. Bill was also a member of the MEDC Board since 1995 and past chairman.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ann Dowdy of McKinney, Texas; children, William C. Dowdy, III (Trey) and wife, Beth of Dallas, Texas, Jill Dowdy of Dallas, Texas, and Daniel Andrew Dowdy and wife, Kathy of Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren, Emily Dowdy Bush of Austin, Texas, William C. Dowdy, IV of Dallas, Texas, Edward Dowdy and wife, Gina of Amarillo, Texas, Andrew Dowdy and wife, Brooke of Dallas, Texas, and Meg Dowdy of Austin, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Woodrow William Bush (Woody) of Austin, Texas and Catherine Ann Dowdy (Cate) of Amarillo, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Judge and Mrs. William C. Dowdy Sr.; and sister, Eugenia Graves.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2012, at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in McKinney, Texas.
