Smith knocks down rare 7-point play

As part of his 15-point performance on the night, McKinney Lions sophomore guard Preston Smith accomplished a remarkable basketball rarity in Friday night's 73-36 win against Denton Ryan.

Smith was fouled on a 3-point attempt, then benefitted from a double technical on the same play resulting in a 7-point opportunity. Smith proceeded to sink all seven attempts from the charity stripe to complete the 7-point play.

Nationally ranked soccer action

The McKinney Boyd girls soccer team will play in the National Elite Prep Showcase, the top high school soccer tournament in the nation. It runs from Jan. 10 -12 in Fort Worth and is hosted by Nolan Catholic and Southlake Carroll. The tournament field boasts nine of the top 50 ranked teams in the country, including area teams Boyd, Plano West, Marcus, Coppell and Flower Mound.

Sidekicks suffer first loss

The Dallas Sidekicks fell from the ranks of the PASL unbeaten Sunday, dropping an 8-7 overtime decision to the Chicago Mustangs.

It wasn't without its share of late-game heroics on both sides though, with Dallas rallying for two unanswered goals inside the final two minutes of regulation. Utilizing an extra attacker, the Sidekicks recorded goals by Nick Stavrou and Franck Mbemba -- both assisted by Ricardinho -- within 30 seconds of each other to tie Chicago, 7-7, and force overtime.

The goals highlighted a fourth quarter that featured nine total scores, including five from Chicago. In the end, Dallas' rally would fall short after Bryan Velazquez found the back of the net on a Nestor Hernandez assist 4:57 into overtime to deal the Sidekicks their first loss of the season.

In defeat, Dallas was led by four points from Ricardinho (one goal, three assists), two goals by Mbemba and additional scores from Paolo Da Silva, Jamie Lovegrove and Cody Ellis. Now 8-1 on the season, the Sidekicks won't have to wait long for a crack at redemption and will host Chicago Saturday at 7 p.m. from the Allen Event Center.
