Tennis: Carroll ready for regionals following fifth consecutive district title
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
The Lady Dragons weren't the only team securing a district title as Carroll's tennis team picked up the same honor following an undefeated regular season in District 4-5A.
As a result of finishing unbeaten in district, Carroll was exempt from playing in the district tourney and received an automatic berth in this weekend's Region I Tournament in Abilene.
It is the fifth consecutive season Carroll has won its district.
"They were good teams and we were able to play our top lineups for the most part," said Corey Aldridge, Carroll head coach. "Everyone played well and even though we were without our No. 1 girl (Kelley Anderson) who had strep throat on Saturday, our girls still won all of their matches."
Carroll defeated Grapevine, 13-6, before topping Wichita Falls, 17-2, and Rider, 14-5.
"Our boys are doing pretty well, too," Aldridge added. "We switched up a couple of doubles teams and both of them have responded. And our mixed team is a brother and sister team (Elise Landers and Matt Landers) that is playing really well. You would think, like a lot of siblings, that you couldn't put them together because they wouldn't go long without arguing but that isn't the case here. They get along great and are playing well together."
For the boys, Aldridge flipped the top two doubles combinations of Collin Alexander and Jack Learmonth and John Wooldridge and Eshan Dave to Alexander-Woolridge and Dave-Learmonth.
Aldridge also credited assistant coach Brenna Athens for the effectiveness she has had coaching the girls.
"She's a good coach and played tennis at Texas Tech," he said. "The girls have really been responding to her."
Carroll finds out its first opponent in regionals Thursday at a seeding meeting before kicking off the tourney Friday morning. The top four teams receive seeds at the regional tournament.
"We're hoping for a seed," Aldridge said. "But we know that since we won our district we won't play a No. 1 seed in the first round. But we could play a runner-up from the area like Marcus or Colleyville Heritage, which are both talented teams."
