WEB EXCLUSIVE: Ludwig headed for NHL training camp-After brief stop in Houston, Americans defenseman goes to Minnesota

Published: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 1:28 PM CST
Another weekend, another Ludwig called up to the AHL.

Two weeks ago, Allen Americans defenseman Tyler Ludwig was brought up to the Houston Aeros.

The Aeros (AHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild) replicated that this week, only this time going with Tyler's brother Trevor Ludwig, who also played the blue line for Allen. Trevor, in his first AHL call-up, played Sunday for Houston. His stay there wasn't long though as he is already in training camp with the Wild.

"It's a great opportunity for Trevor and maybe a little more," said Craig Ludwig, Allen special assistant to the coaching staff and Trevor's father. "You get the exposure at the AHL level, then the opportunity to participate in Minnesota Wild training camp and be seen by some NHL brass. It's great that the Houston Aeros have given some of our players an opportunity to play at the next level."

In addition to the twins, Allen defenseman Mike Montgomery was also called-up to Houston this season.

Trevor, a sixth round pick of the Dallas Stars in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, earned his opportunity after accumulating 18 points (six goals and 12 assists) in 33 games. The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder also helped the Americans uphold a stingy defense that produced back-to-back CHL Goaltenders of the Month.

Allen win streak halted by Fort Worth

After amassing a season-high seven-game win streak, Allen has now lost back-to-back games for just the second time this season.

Allen lost consecutive 4-3 games to the Fort Worth Brahmas over the weekend.

The Americans and Brahmas have played to three straight 4-3 decisions with Allen winning one on the road Jan. 8 for their seventh straight victory. That streak was broken when returning home Friday night.

Allen found itself in a 4-1 hole midway through the third with its lone goal from Trevor. But after facing a 20-11 shots on goal disparity through the first two periods, the Americans picked up the pace in the third with a 16-9 advantage that led to goals from Jason Deitsch and Jarret Lukin. Deitsch also assisted on Lukin's goal, which pulled the home team within 4-3 with 53 seconds remaining.

There were no further heroics though as that served as the final score and Forth Worth picked up just its second win ever at the AEC. Jamie Schaafsma, who has nine points in his last five games (three goals, six assists), registered two assists Friday.

The end result would be 4-3 again Saturday despite a switch of venue to the NYTEX Sports Centre and an additional period.

The journey to that final was different as well with the team's tied at the end of all three periods. Allen got a goal from Adam Pineault in the first period for a 1-1 tie which remained intact until the third when both teams lit the lamp twice. The Brahmas got a pair of goals from John Snowden while Kale Kerbashian did the same for the Americans in his first game with the team. Kerbashian notched the equalizer with 4:41 remaining.

The momentum shifts continued 2:55 into overtime as Fort Worth's Greg Eskedjian scored the game winner off an assist by Adam Hogg for the 4-3 win.

Despite the consecutive losses, Allen (24-6-3, 51 points) is still firmly atop the CHL standings with a six-point lead over the Wichita Thunder and four games in hand. Following a three-game run against Fort Worth, the Americans embark on three straight against the Arizona Sundogs. Allen plays at Tim's Toyota Center Friday and Saturday before wrapping up the series at 1:05 p.m. Monday from the AEC.
