West remains best in nation

Plano West girls soccer started the season ranked No. 1 nationally by Elite Soccer Report.

The Lady Wolves did nothing to change that over the weekend at the season-opening National Elite Prep Showcase in Fort Worth.

West went 4-0 at the nation's top tourney.

The Lady Wolves beat Fort Worth Nolan (4-1) Thursday, Flower Mound (3-1) Friday and San Angelo Central (6-0) Saturday in a game where sophomore Ashley Smith tickled the twine four times.

But the marquee win came Friday afternoon against St. Thomas Aquinas (Florida).

Aquinas came in ranked No. 2, but lost, 2-1, thanks to goals from Lady Wolves seniors Casie Ramsier and Taylor Jackson off respective assists from junior Tori Gates and senior Taylor Barg.

Next up for West is the Allen Girls Soccer Showcase, which begins today.

JPII ascends to No. 1 in state

Unbeaten in district, John Paul II girls basketball is now ranked tops in Texas.

The Lady Cardinals clock in at No. 1 among large private schools in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches state rankings. John Paul, 18-9 overall and 4-0 in district, bumped Bishop Lynch from the top spot after upending the Lady Friars in double overtime, 64-62, on Jan. 8.

The Plano East boys moved up three spots to No. 4 in Class 5A.

Planoite James Buescher won the Camping World Trucks Series in 2012.

He will return to defend his title in 2013.

Buescher was expected to race full time in the Nationwide Series in 2013, but instead agreed to return to Turner Motorsports while running in a limited number of Nationwide events.

Buescher will try to become the first driver to win back-to-back truck series titles.

Figueroa returns to cage

For the second straight year, West Plano Crossfit-trained mixed martial artist Edwin Figueroa will be on the UFC's Super Bowl weekend card.

Figueroa returns to action for the first time in a year on Feb. 2 when he meets Francisco Rivera at UFC 156 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

A McKinney native, Figueroa competed just once in 2012 -- a split-decision victory over Alex Caceres at UFC 143 during which Caceres was penalized two points for kicks to the groin. The points proved decisive in the decision, with the win upping Figueroa to 2-1 in the UFC and 9-1 overall.

Figueroa was scheduled to fight in June at UFC on FX 4 against Ken Stone but was forced out due to injury.

Jones, Team USA win gold

The 2013 U.S. National Junior Hockey Team won gold Saturday at the 2013 International Ice Hockey World Junior Championships in Russia.

Among those standing on the podium was Plano native Seth Jones, an alternate captain for the team.

The defenseman, a candidate for the top pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, had the second-most points among defensemen in the tournament with one goal and six assists.

The U.S. National Junior Team won the tournament for the third time (2004, 2010) by defeating Sweden in the finals, 3-1.

"I couldn't be more proud of our players and staff," said Phil Housley, U.S head coach. "This was a total team effort throughout the tournament and it was a very difficult challenge tonight against an excellent Swedish team."
