Volleyball: No panic: Heritage bounces Creekview after dropping first set

Published: Tuesday, November 6, 2012 5:28 PM CST
CARROLLTON - There was no panic from Frisco Heritage after dropping the opening set of its bi-district match against Carrollton Creekview Tuesday night.

The Lady Coyotes had been there before after navigating through a tough District 9-4A slate and used that experience to earn a 3-1 (22-25, 29-27, 25-16, 25-20) victory over the Lady Mustangs from Hebron High School.

"We lose that first game and we're not worried," said Laura Derdeyn, Heritage head coach. "We know we've gone through that and we know we can come back from it."

Creekview used a bit of trickery on its serves during the first set and multiple aces from sophomore setter Megan Grimes and senior libero Stephanie Dyess gave the Lady Mustangs an eventual 22-19 lead.

Senior middle blocker Ashley Bennett completed the set with one of her six kills to give Creekview a 25-22 victory in the first game.

Creekview then began the second set in a similar fashion and stormed out to a 6-2 lead with the potential to take a commanding two-set lead.

"I felt really good about our start," said Angel Mauterer, Creekview head coach. "I just wish we could have finished a little better."

However, the Lady Mustangs couldn't keep the pace and allowed Heritage to score 11 of the next 15 points for a 13-10 lead.

The onslaught was led by junior outside hitter Ericka Timberlake, who finished the night with eight kills and one ace.

After digging themselves into a 21-15 hole, the Lady Mustangs would mount a comeback of their own in the set behind the strong play of senior outside hitter Julie Chrisman, who was making her first start in two weeks after being sidelined with an injury.

"[Chrisman] stepped up big for us," Mauterer said.

A Chrisman kill brought the set to a 21-21 tie and the senior eventually put the Lady Mustangs within reach of a 2-0 lead after making it 25-24 on another of her game-high 15 kills.

The Lady Coyotes wouldn't be denied though, and went on to take a 29-27 win to even the match at one set apiece.

"That was huge," Derdeyn said. "Something that defines this team is they never quit."

The comeback victory in the second set gave Heritage added momentum and the Lady Coyotes carried that strong play into the final two sets of the match.

Junior outside hitter Daisha Younger gave Heritage a 15-9 lead in the third set after hitting one of her team-high 11 kills.

"Where [Younger] has come from the beginning of the season is ridiculous," Derdeyn said. "She has worked harder than anyone to be here."

The Lady Coyotes would take their biggest lead of the night after an ace from sophomore Kassidie Baldwin made it 21-11. The two teams would trade points for a remainder of the set, giving Heritage a 25-16 win and a 2-1 lead.

"That momentum definitely carried over for us," Derdeyn said. "They want those close games and they love it."

Timberlake gave Heritage another quick start in the fourth set by making it a 4-1 lead on a smash hit from junior libero Jennie Botteron.

The Lady Mustangs kept things interesting though and eventually tied it at eight points apiece.

Back-to-back kills from Heritage senior Denisse Dominguez and Chrisman kept the game tied at 16-16 before Heritage gained a little separation after an ace from Botteron.

Botteron's serve made it a 23-20 affair and the Lady Coyotes kept their foot on the gas for the next two points and a 25-20 win.

"[Heritage] came out and jumped on us," Mauterer said. "We came here anticipating a dog fight from a very good and very hungry team."

Bennett finished the match with six kills and two aces for Creekview while Reiner and junior Jennifer Ene added four apiece.

For Heritage, Younger and Timberlake got help from teammates Dominguez (five kills) and junior Skylar Deady (four blocks).

The Lady Mustangs end their season with a 24-15 mark after posting a 12-2 record against District 10-4A counterparts.

The Lady Coyotes, the third seed from District 9-4A, will now advance for a Thursday showdown against Molina, who earned a straight-set sweep of Samuell Tuesday night.
