Cross country: Marcus boys make case for state ranking

Published: Saturday, October 6, 2012 12:04 AM CDT
The latest set of state cross country rankings by Texastrack.com was peppered with local programs, including Marcus in seventh on the girls side.

The Marauders did not make an appearance on the boys side, however.

On Saturday, though, Marcus stated its case as the Marauders completed a sweep of first in both boys and girls action at The Colony Cougar Classic from Hidden Cove Park.

Marcus' boys (52) edged out Flower Mound for first (59), with Coppell in sixth (182), The Colony in 10th (241), Lewisville in 12th (343) and R.L. Turner in 14th (411).

The Lady Marauders couldn't relax either as Marcus (30) narrowly held off Highland Park (39) for first. Rounding out the local girls programs were Coppell in third (95), Flower Mound in sixth (165), The Colony in seventh (168), Lewisville in 10th (271) and Turner in 13th (380).

"It was a good race for us in some tough conditions," said Steve Telaneus, Marcus head coach. "It was our third sweep in a row."

Marcus' Logan Hendrix (16:06.84) and Flower Mound's Wesley Ward (16:17.71) battled it out for the top individual finish, taking first and second, respectively. Coppell's Carson Vickroy wasn't far off the pace in fourth (16:22.30), while The Colony's Blake Anderson placed 12th (16:39.99). Leading the way for other local programs was Lewisville's Wesley Townsend in 46th (17:36.14) and Turner's Eddy Jasso in 73rd (18:30.40). Hebron also had multiple individuals compete but did not field a full team. The Hawks were paced by James Bodnar in 13th (16:40.58).

"It was very big for Logan to win that race," Telaneus said. "It was a big confidence builder. He got out in front and was able to hold on for the win. He is still a young runner and is learning how to drive and not get caught. The last couple of races he got leads but couldn't hang on. On Saturday, he was able to get a lead early but still kept the pressure on."

Nobody could catch Highland Park's Natalie Rathjean on the girls side (18:35.21), but the Lady Marauders put up the toughest fight with the second-, third- and fourth-place finishers, including a silver from Sydney Brown (18:39.81).

"It was great to see the girls cross the line in order a bit," Telaneus said. "That's one of the team aspects we are always working on and the girls got in front and ran well as a pack. They executed very well."

Southlake Carroll, meanwhile, was off last weekend and continues Saturday at the Nike South Invitational in The Woodlands, as do Marcus and Flower Mound.

"It's the first meet that will really show us how good we are," Telaneus said. "It's the real deal and the best teams from throughout the state will be there. It should be a good gauge of where we are at."
