Two officers among four hurt in collision
By Dan Eakin, deakin@starlocalnews.com
Four people, including two Carrollton police officers and two men suspected of driving while intoxicated, were taken to area hospitals for minor injuries after a police vehicle was rear ended about 6 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Interstate 35 and the President George Bush Turnpike.
Jon Stovall of the Carrollton Police Department said two separate police cars were stopped at the scene. While a man suspected of driving while intoxicated was being placed in the back of one of the police cars, Carrollton police dispatch received a 911 call that a second DWI suspect was driving north in I-35.
Shortly after receiving the 911 call, Stovall said, the officer’s patrol call in which the suspect was sitting was struck from behind by a black sedan.
Matia Morua-Alvarez, 27, of Lewisville, was charged with driving while intoxicated and three counts of aggravated assault.
The collision involving a police vehicle was the second to occur in Carrollton in less than a week.
Last Thursday, a Carrollton police officer pulled in behind a vehicle stopped at a red light when suddenly the driver of the vehicle put his vehicle in reverse and crashed it into the squad car that was behind him.
The officer was not injured. Julio Zubiaga, 64, of Carrollton, who had three prior arrests for driving while intoxicated, was charged with felony DWI.
