Sunnyvale basketball teams rounding into postseason form

Published: Wednesday, January 23, 2013 1:38 PM CST
With the regular season winding down, this is the time of year that area basketball teams are hoping to peak.

The Sunnyvale boys and girls teams seem to be among that group.

The Raider boys picked up a pair of victories this past week to improve to 5-2 in 12-2A play and 14-8 overall.

Sunnyvale took care of Farmersville on Tuesday with a 52-39 victory. The Raiders got off to a slow start, but turned it up as the game went on.

After scoring only four points in the first quarter, they rallied to take a 20-18 lead at halftime and then outscored the Farmers 32-21 in the second half.

Sunnyvale shot 49 percent from the field in the game. Stephen Kirven led the way with 14 points. Josh Quinn had 12 points on five-of-six shooting from the field and Thomas Wendt added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Raiders had been coming off a 45-35 win over Pilot Point on Friday.

Sunnyvale did its damage in the first and third quarters. After starting the game on a 15-9 run, the Raiders pushed the advantage to 10 at the end of three quarters and maintained that through the end.

Quinn had 17 points, including a pair of three-pointers, while Wendt added 11. Both were clutch from the free throw line, where they combined to knock down 14-of-15 attempts.

Sunnyvale will host Van Alstyne on Friday and then play at Leonard on Tuesday.

The Raider girls followed suit with two victories to improve to 21-5 overall and 8-1 in district play.

Sunnyvale took down Farmersville on Tuesday with a 53-38 victory. The Raiders opened the game on a 13-4 run and never looked back.

Sheridan Lewis scored a team-high 16 points, with Grace Goodhart also in double figures with 12.

Sunnyvale had a much easier time on Friday in a 57-25 victory over Pilot Point. Goodhart had a huge all-around game with 20 points, seven steals and four assists.

Lewis added nine points while Andi Morgan had seven points and nine rebounds.

Sunnyvale will face Van Alstyne on Friday before traveling to face Leonard on Tuesday.
