Golf: Local competitors thrive at Old American

Published: Tuesday, May 22, 2012 5:31 PM CDT
Golfers from throughout North Texas descended upon The Colony last Monday as the Old American Golf Club hosted a U.S. Open qualifying tournament.

The top five finishers qualified to advance to the sectional tournament, which takes place June 4 at Lakeside Country Club in Houston.

The 2012 U.S. Open takes place June 14-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Among the qualifiers were a pair of local residents, including The Colony's Thomas Baker and Southlake amateur and Carroll golfer Vince Martino.

Harry Higgs of Overland Park, Kan., a golfer at SMU, won the tournament after carding a 2-under par 69. Baker, Martino, Fort Worth's Freddie Janneck and Richardson's Jarrett Hamilton each fired rounds of 70 to qualify as well. Southlake amateur and Carroll product Blake Pugh (72) and Fort Worth's Brian Wilson (72) advanced as alternates.

In all, 81 competitors hit the course for the qualifier.

"It went very well," said Mike McCabe, who has been the course's general manager for the past six months. "It's a prestigious honor to host an event like that, especially in the early years of the course. We are hoping it's a relationship we continue to build and that we are able to host more qualifiers in the future."

McCabe said the golfers were impressed with the conditions and challenges presented by the Old American.

"They thought it was unbelievable," he said. "We had a lot of rave reviews. It's a pure golf experience and I think the competitors felt that."

Golfers were also greeted with calm conditions as opposed to the gust of winds that can typically be associated with a course that is nestled on the shores of Lewisville Lake.

"There was virtually no wind," McCabe said. "So I think for the top score to be 2-under even with good conditions speaks volumes to the test of the golf course. "

The Old American is a semi-private golf club in its second full year of operation. The course -- one of Golfweek's top 10 "Best Courses You Can Play" in Texas and Golf Magazines's No. 5-rated "Best of New" courses in 2010 -- has continued to make improvements, including the opening of and new additions to its carriage house.

"It's our sophomore year and everything is really starting to come together," McCabe said. "The course is really maturing and coming into its own."
