YEAR IN REVIEW No. 6: Wrangler girls basketball team falls two points short of state tournament

There is not much that is missing from West Mesquite's list of accomplishments from the last few years.
Since 2005, the Wranglers have made the playoffs in each of those eight seasons, have won at least a share of seven consecutive district championships and have advanced to the regional tournament three times.
Of those trips, last year's was the closest West Mesquite had come yet to breaking through and advancing to the state tournament but it fell just a little short in a 36-34 loss to Rockwall.
But West Mesquite was starting to get healthy and the results showed on the court.
The Wranglers embarked on an 18-game winning streak that took them through the final four games of the Dallas ISD Coca-Cola Tournament, to a perfect 16-0 record in district play and on into the playoffs.
West Mesquite had few problems with its early opponents, handling Hutto (80-51), Tyler John Tyler (55-37) and Sherman (53-38) to return to the regional tournament.
The Wranglers then moved to the finals for the second straight year when they dispatched Highland Park, 62-51, in the semifinals.
The regional championship could not have started any worse for West Mesquite, which scored only 11 points in the first half and trailed by a dozen.
Behind 16 points from Sha'Georgia Williams and 10 from Claudia Price, the Wranglers chipped away and made it a game late, but ultimately fell a basket short of its first trip to Austin.
