YEAR IN REVIEW No. 9: Eagle baseball team wins fifth straight district championship
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Having success is one thing, sustaining it is another.
Old players go and new ones arrive on an annual basis in high school sports, making extended runs of excellence all the more difficult.
Yet that is what the Rowlett baseball team has been able to accomplish.
Rowlett has compiled a 61-5 record in district play during that span, but this past year was one of the toughest.
The Eagles dropped a pair of games in 10-5A to rival Sachse, but they took care of business against the rest of the district and their 12-2 mark at the end was once again good enough to claim the trophy.
Rowlett got off to a strong start in the playoffs, as Brett Byrum threw a three-hit shutout and Colton Kalmus tossed a one-hitter in back-to-back 10-0 victories over Sunset.
But fortune was not on the Eagles side in the area finals, as they dropped a pair of one-run heartbreakers (4-3, 2-1) to Belton that ended their season.
If Rowlett is to extend its streak of district titles, the 2013 season will present the biggest challenge yet. In additon to losing Byrum, the district most valuable player, and Kalmus, the Eagles also graduated offensive player of the year Jerad Wilson and defensive player of the year Jerad Fowler among other contributors.
But that does not mean they are setting their sights any lower.
"There are going to be a lot of new guys, and it is going to be a challenge, but I am looking forward to it," Rowlett head coach Paul Carmon said. "It is nice like it was this year knowing what you have, but as a coach, it is also exciting to be in the situation of having a lot of new guys. All our kids work very hard in the offseason and it might be tough early on, but I think by the time district play starts, we'll be ready to go."
