Sidekicks sock San Diego from unbeaten ranks: Dallas deals Sockers historic first loss
By J. David Barron, dbarron@starlocalnews.com
Kraig Chiles blasted an 8-yard strike from the left elbow with 6.7 seconds left in Sunday's match at the Allen Event Center to force overtime, but Shaun David scored on a 1-on-1 breakaway following a sensational save and outlet pass by Sagu to snap the longest winning streak in U.S. professional sports history, delighting a raucous crowd of 4,701 with a dramatic 6-5 win over the San Diego Sockers.
Playing inspired ball from the first whistle, the Sidekicks stopped a historic record of 48 consecutive wins by San Diego. The Sockers began the longest winning streak in United States professional sports history on Dec. 29, 2010.
Jamie Lovegrove continued his torrid scoring binge with his second 4-goal game of the year. Lovegrove's outburst gave him 20 goals in 12 games this season, and coupled with another terrific effort in the net by Sagu, the leading goal keeper in the PASL who had 19 saves, the Sidekicks were able to prevail in the match that featured four ties after Dallas jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Sockers (11-1) maintained a comfortable lead in the Pacific Division despite the loss, while the Sidekicks (10-2) strengthened their hold on the top spot in the Central Division of the 19-team league.
