Boys basketball: Cougars gearing up for showdown with Little Elm, girls one game back

The District 9-4A Championship in boys basketball may well be on the line Tuesday when The Colony (7-2) goes on the road to face Little Elm (8-1).
The Cougars are the only team to have beaten the Lobos in district and are currently riding a five-game win streak, including victories last week against Prosper, 54-50, and Frisco Heritage, 61-60.
"Those were nice wins but were focused on tonight and looking ahead," said Cleve Ryan, The Colony head coach.
Against Prosper on Friday, The Colony started strong but let Prosper back in the contest with a 23-12 run in the third quarter. However, the Cougars regained the lead in the fourth quarter and held on for the win.
"Prosper is a team that is capable of beating anyone," Ryan said. "They haven't won in district, but have had a few bad beats and have proven they are dangerous. We were thankful to get out of there with a win on the road."
Bobby White led The Colony with 13 points, while Jared Wiseman scored 11 and Aaron Miller had 10.
Prosper's top scorer was Brandon Grudzielanek (13 points).
"We were up 11 at half but Prosper just started hitting some shots," Ryan added. "But we had a balanced scoring effort and we play well when we are doing that."
In the win against Heritage, The Colony led by four in the final seconds before a Heritage 3-pointer made for a tighter final score.
White and Wiseman scored 17 points apiece, while Blake Chicoine chipped in 12 points.
"We've been doing a decent job of rebounding and playing defense," Ryan said. "But that are always areas where you can improve."
The Colony continues at home at 8 p.m. Friday against Frisco Centennial before its tilt with Little Elm.
Girls basketball: The Colony one game back of playoffs
The Colony's girls basketball team are one game back of playoff position in District 9-4A after the Lady Cougars dropped a pair of games last week.
The Colony came up short Friday against Prosper, 50-36, on the heels of a loss Jan. 22 against Frisco Heritage, 53-29.
Terra Ellison scored 12 points in both games. Kandyce Freeman scored 16 points for Prosper.
"We need to do a better job of take caring of the ball and making better passes," said Jason Weese, The Colony head coach. "That should help take care of what is ailing us on offense."
The Colony continues at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Frisco Centennial before going on the road next Tuesday for its district finale against Little Elm. The Lady Cougars also hosted Frisco Wakeland Tuesday (results not available as of press time).
"That's a huge game," Weese said. "Hopefully we can come together at the right time and start winning some home games. We're going to have to get to [Wakeland's] shooters and close out on them.
"We had a very good practice Monday and the girls are ready to get back out there."
