Never close: Rangers dominate Celina from start to finish

Published: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:58 PM CST
FRISCO – The Celina boys basketball team took a 2-0 lead against Frisco Lone Star after a pair of early free throws from senior guard Kyle Sudberry.

It would be the first and last lead of the game for the Bobcats, as the Rangers dominated the remainder of the contest to earn an 80-38 victory.

“We’ve struggled scoring the ball lately,” said Jody Brown, Lone Star head coach. “So it was really good to see that.”

The Rangers had five players score in double figures, with guard Preston Schilling pouring in a game-high 18 points and guard Zach Brown adding 13 of his own.

Following Sudberry’s free throws in the opening minute of the game, Lone Star built a double-digit lead with a 16-0 run that featured a flurry of points in transition. The run ended at the 3:15 mark of the quarter when Celina junior forward Deshawn Davis converted two shots at the charity stripe.

“We have guys having to play out of position right now and that hurts us,” said Dusty Hutson, Celina head coach.

The Rangers ultimately came away with a 22-6 advantage after the first eight minutes and never looked back from there.

Lone Star extended its lead to 29-6 at the 6:20 mark of the second quarter when Schilling grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on an easy shot under the basket.

Celina junior guard Braylin Brown helped limit the damage by earning multiple trips to the free-throw line during the second quarter. Brown scored nine of his team-high 13 points in the frame after sinking 11 free throws on the night.

“[Brown] did a good job of driving and attacking the basket,” Hutson said. “We just turned the ball over too much.”

The Bobcats got within 19 points late in the second quarter, but the Rangers made it a 43-22 halftime advantage after Brown scored on a putback jumper with just three seconds on the clock.

“If [Lone Star] didn’t hit some of those early shots, it could have been a completely different game,” Hutson said.

Lone Star beat the buzzer once again in the third quarter when Schilling drilled a midrange jumper to give his team a 66-30 lead. With the Bobcats struggling to find much of a rhythm on offense, it would be all Lone Star needed.

“We trapped a little bit and tried to get them out of their offense,” Brown said. “We knew they had some guys playing out of position.”

The lead widened to 41 points with just 55 seconds left in regulation when Lone Star sophomore guard M’Kyl Bordes drilled a fade away jumper for a 78-37 advantage.

The Rangers finished the night with an 80-38 victory to improve to 12-13 on the season.

“We were in pretty bad shape earlier in the season,” Brown said. “Hopefully this gets us back in it.”

However, the team couldn’t continue that momentum on Tuesday and dropped a 57-53 contest to Argyle to fall to 2-3 against district counterparts. The Rangers return to the court Friday for a 7:30 p.m. road game against Carrollton Ranchview.

Celina is still in search of its first district win after falling to Aubrey, 77-53, on Tuesday. The Bobcats will take on Argyle in a 7:30 p.m. contest on Feb. 5.

“These kids play hard,” Hutson said. ‘I’m proud of the kind of effort they put out.”
