Edging closer: Bobcats look to end seven-game skid

Published: Wednesday, January 23, 2013 1:13 PM CST
The Celina boys basketball team dropped a pair of district games on Friday and Tuesday to push its season-high losing streak to seven games.

However, the Bobcats still have playoff aspirations and find themselves in a crucial district showdown Friday against Frisco Lone Star.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a must-win game,” said Dusty Hutson, Celina boys head coach. “It would be great to win it though, obviously.”

In the midst of Celina’s seven-game skid, the Bobcats have started District 10-3A action with a 0-3 mark while Friday’s contest marks the halfway point of the district season.

“If we can go over [to Frisco] and beat Lone Star, that might jumpstart our season,” Hutson said.

Celina’s most recent losses came courtesy of the two first-place teams with Argyle and Carrollton Ranchview boasting a combined 6-0 district mark.

“We just didn’t play very well against Arygle,” Hutson said. “We played out of our element in that one.”

The Bobcats dug themselves into a 21-6 hole after the opening quarter and had to limit the damage from there. The Eagles outscored Celina in all four frames, using a 14-point advantage over the final three quarters to earn a 51-22 victory.

“We’ve lost a few games in a row, so the kids are kind of questioning themselves right now,” Hutson said.

The team looked to rebound from Friday’s blowout loss to Argyle by grabbing a key victory against Ranchview. Another slow start made things difficult for the Bobcats though, with a 24-12 deficit after eight minutes proving too costly.

“Ranchview came out hitting all of their outside shots,” Hutson said. “We tried to take away the drive and they beat us on those long shots.”

The Bobcats did claw their way back into the game and got within two points midway through the fourth quarter. However, Ranchview pulled away in the final minutes from the free-throw line to hand Celina its seventh consecutive loss.

“I was proud of the kids,” Hutson said. “They played hard and kept fighting.”

The loss gives Friday’s matchup with Lone Star added importance, with only five games remaining for Celina to state its postseason case.

“A win against Lone Star and we’re really back in the race,” Hutson said.

The two teams will tip off at 7:45 p.m. with the varsity girls preceding the night’s finale at 6:30 p.m.
