Pair of Wolves commit to Navarro

Plano West football has added two more to its college football list as senior defensive end Nick Green and senior offensive lineman Stephan Randall verbally committed to Navarro Junior College over the weekend.

These are the third and fourth recent senior commitments for the Wolves after Mason Gentry (SMU) and Parker Murry (Sam Houston State).

Green and Randall had strong seasons for West.

Green forced two fumbles and recovered two while also registering multiple sacks, tackles for loss and quarterback pressures. The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder was named second team all-district.

Versatility was key for Randall in 2012 as the three-year varsity player and honorable mention 10-5A selection started on the defensive line before shifting to stabilize the offensive line.

In Navarro, Green and Randall have a school on the upswing.

The Bulldogs had their highest scoring team ever in 2012, amassing a 10-2 record while winning the Southwest Junior College Football Conference and finishing fourth in the final NJCAA poll.

Figueroa in the cage Saturday

For the second straight year, West Plano Crossfit-trained Edwin Figueroa will be on the UFC's Super Bowl weekend card.

On Saturday, Figueroa is fighting Francisco Rivera at UFC 156 in Las Vegas.

A McKinney native, Figueroa competed just once in 2012 -- a split-decision win over Alex Caceres at UFC 143 in which Caceres was penalized two points for kicks to the groin. The win upped Figueroa to 2-1 in the UFC and 9-1 overall.

Figueroa was scheduled to fight in June at UFC on FX 4 against Ken Stone before getting injured.

Jones ranked No. 1 in North America

Plano native Seth Jones' march to become the first defenseman taken No. 1 in the NHL Entry Draft in seven years took another step Tuesday as he was named the No. 1 skater in North America in the 2013 midterm rankings by NHL Central Scouting.

Jones would be the first American-born player chosen No. 1 since Patrick Kane in 2007.

Jones plays for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League.

Jones is fifth among first-year WHL players with 28 points in 33 games. He also has a plus-29 rating. Jones has piled up the points in the past month as the 6-foot-3, 208-pounder tallied six assists and a goal in helping the United States win gold at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The race for No. 1 is between Jones and Nathan MacKinnon (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League).

Nike Hoop Summit selects Randle

Prestonwood Christian Academy senior Julius Randle has been selected for the Nike Hoop Summit on Apr. 20 in Portland, Ore.

"Julius was obviously selected based on his ability to play basketball, but more importantly based on his character," said Chris Mayberry, Prestonwood head coach. "He has kept such a positive attitude dealing with the adversity of his injury and will continue to be selected for honors and awards because of his character."

The Nike Hoop Summit is one of the premier high school basketball showcases, pitting the country's top seniors against a World Select Team.

Randle is no stranger to such competition, capturing a gold medal on Team USA at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship last summer.

Wodka's recruiting trail

Plano West senior middle linebacker Jake Wodka's recruiting journey may run right up until Wednesday's National Signing Day.

And it's not for lack of options.

Quite the opposite in fact as Wodka already holds offers from the University of Pennsylvania, Eastern Kentucky, Harvard and Princeton. He is continuing to visit schools though, going to Sioux Falls and Iowa State this weekend as well as planning on Sam Houston State next weekend. Wodka is also hoping to visit Abilene Christian, Stephen F. Austin and Midwestern State.

Wodka's performance justifies the interest.

Wodka was West's Defensive MVP as the Wolves put together their best playoff run in program history. He also led the team in tackles, forced fumbles and recovered fumbles en route to being a unanimous first team all-district pick.

Wodka is stout in the classroom as well with a 3.56 GPA.

East at No. 2 in state softball poll

Expectations are high for Plano East softball again in 2013.

After advancing to the Class 5A State Semifinals for the second time in four seasons last year, the Lady Panthers are ranked No. 2 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association preseason poll.

Defending state champions Deer Park lead the Class 5A rankings.

East opens the season Feb. 12 against Rockwall.

Ringo heads up masters clinic

Plano East head football coach Johnny Ringo will be the clinic coordinator Feb. 20-21 when the Texas Football Masters Clinic comes to the DoubleTree Galleria.

Ringo is also president of the Texas High School Coaches Association.

The clinic, which runs 4-6 p.m. both days, will focus on advanced schemes and techniques from top coaches across the state.
