Back to school: Parents to get dose of education from MISD

A new Mesquite ISD program is looking to get parents more involved in the education process of their child. The program, Parent University, is the brainchild of Dr. Mona Lincoln, MISD administrative officer for executive services.

"There is a vast amount of research that parents' understanding their child's education is huge for their development. We are always searching for ways to help parents be successful," Lincoln said. "Parent University was created as a way to get parents involved in the process. We are always doing special programs to help parents. This is just a different twist."

The first session of Parent University is scheduled to cover the district's KARES concepts. KARES is an acronym that stands for Kindness, Acceptance, Respect, Empathy and Service. The session is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the MISD Professional Development Center, 2600 Motley Drive. Parents need to register online at www.mesquiteisd.org by Feb. 5 to attend the classes during the first session of Parent University.

"Each parent will get to pick two classes that they want to take," Lincoln said. "We will start with a beginning session and then the two classes. We will end the evening by doing an evaluation to determine what else they need help on."

The kindness class focuses on helping children manage their behavior. The acceptance class teaches parents how to integrate themselves as part of the education team. The respect class focuses on learning how to teach children to respect themself and others. The empathy class will help to instruct parents on teaching their children understanding and developing healthy relationships. The service class is about understanding how responsibility leads to independence.

"We will teach them some practical strategies to help their students," Lincoln said.

Lincoln said the second session of the university will focus on transitions and will happen in May. The session will teach parents how to help their children deal with the transition from kindergarten to first grade, the transition from elementary school to middle school and the transition from middle to high school.

"We really hope we can make this an ongoing thing. There is a huge need for it and we hope parents will see how important it can be," Lincoln said.
