Golf: Cowgirls corral District 7-5A Championship

By Justin Thomas, Jthomas@starlocalnews.com

During the past 15 seasons, it would have taken a stellar performance to knock Southlake Carroll's girls golf team off its perch atop the standings as the Lady Dragons won their district tournament on each occasion.

But that's exactly what Coppell received April 10-11 at the District 7-5A Tournament at Bridlewood Golf Course in Flower Mound. The Cowgirls combined to fire a program record score of 595 to edge out the Lady Dragons for first by five strokes. Coppell carded a score of 292 on its first round to gain an early nine-stroke advantage, well-ahead of the previous program record of 306, which was set earlier this season.

The Lady Dragons Black Team finished second with a score of 600, while the Green Team took third (629).

Leading the charge for Coppell was Chaithra Katamneni, who won the gold medal individually after posting rounds of 72 and 73 (145). Teammate Tiffany Breitenwischer followed in third (148) with freshman Sol Lee in fourth (149). Rounding out the competitors for the Cowgirls were Taylor Icenberger (158) and Aja Zarrehparvar (161).

It is the second consecutive appearance at regionals for the Cowgirls following a five-year hiatus.

The Lady Dragons' top performer was Allison Bock, who finished one shot off the pace of Katamneni (146). Alex Celli (149) tied for fourth for the Lady Dragons, with Emily Grabarkewitz in sixth (152) and Maddy Rayner and Amanda Juntti in a tie for ninth (154). Carroll's Adriana Morillo also qualified for regionals individually after placing eighth (153) as a member of the Green Team.

The UIL Class 5A Region I Tournament takes place today and Thursday at Rawls Golf Course in Lubbock.

The boys regional tournament took place Monday and Tuesday (results not available as of press time) with the Dragons in action.

Carroll qualified after posting the top score at the boys 7-5A Tournament from Fossil Creek Golf Course.

Vince Martino (139) paced Carroll's effort, besting teammate Matt Gilchrest by four strokes (143). Corbin Kasten followed in fifth for the Dragons (149), with Hunter Glenn in eighth (152).

Coppell, meanwhile, placed fifth (628) but did have one individual qualify as Albert Lo advanced following a fourth-place finish in which he fired rounds of 76 and 72.

Last year, Lo saw his season end in heartbreak after teammate Daniel Dickens recorded an eagle on the final hole to force a playoff, where he edged out Lo for a spot at regionals.
