10-4A BOYS BASKETBALL: West Mesquite falls to North Forney in overtime; Highland Park edges Poteet
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Tuesday was not a good day for the Mesquite ISD teams in 10-4A boys basketball.
West Mesquite fell out of a tie for first place with an overtime loss to North Forney, while Poteet slipped a game behind in the playoff race with a tight loss to Highland Park.
The Wranglers let one slip away against North Forney, who was able to pull out a 64-57 overtime victory.
Braylon Rayson had 18 points, Nate Davis scored 15 and Jalen Etienne added 10 for West Mesquite. Roy Neugent had 16 points to lead a group of four North Forney players in double figures.
Poteet, meanwhile, fell a game behind North Forney with a 43-40 loss to Highland Park on Tuesday. The Pirates, who won the first meeting between the teams, had designs on sweeping the series when they opened a 23-18 lead at halftime.
But the Scots rallied from there, taking control in the second half to move into a tie for second place with West Mesquite.
Chris Murphy had 10 points for Poteet, while Dimitrious Evans and Raffaele Gaines each scored eight.
Carrollton Newman Smith took over sole possession of the top spot in 10-4A with its victory over Terrell.
The Trojans lead West Mesquite and Highalnd Park by one game, with a two-game cushion over North Forney.
The Wranglers are still in the thick of the district championship race, but this week will likely determine their fortunes, as they play at Highland Park on Friday and then host Carrollton Newman Smith on Tuesday.
Poteet needs to defeat Carrollton Creekview on Friday to avoid falling into a tie for sixth place. The Pirates also face winless Terrell on Tuesday.
FRIDAY
West Mesquite and Poteet both picked up big victories as the first half of the 10-4A season came to an end on Friday.
The Wranglers held off an upset bid by winless Terrell to pull out a 63-55 victory.
West Mesquite led by five early on but the Tigers outscored them 23-10 in the second quarter to take a 40-32 lead.
The Wranglers responded in the third quarter, though, ripping off a 20-6 run to regain the advantage and they were then able to hold on in the fourth.
Nate Davis scored 19 points to lead West Mesquite, with Rayson and Jordan Johnson adding 15 and 10 points, respectively.
The Pirates faced a must-win situation against one-win Forney and they came through with a 68-56 victory.
Poteet trailed by three after one quarter but took charge during the middle periods, outscoring the Jackrabbits 36-23 and that proved to be the difference in the game.
Raffaele Gaines had 18 points to lead a quartet of Pirates in double figures. Verkendrick Vaughns scored 14 points, with Nathaniel Gaines adding 13 and Khalil Arnold chipping in with 11.
