Football: Hebron picking up the pace, looking for more explosion on offense

Published: Tuesday, June 19, 2012 3:23 PM CDT
After seeing three defensive linemen graduate and sign college football scholarships, the goal for Hebron's football team during spring practice was clear: develop depth in the trenches.

Hawks' coach Brian Brazil believes the squad was able to do that, as Hebron recently completed a productive month of work.

"It went very well for us," he said. "We had some big things to figure out on offense and defense because we lost some very good players. They aren't going to be easy to replace, but I like what I saw and we had some younger guys step up.

"We also came out of the spring healthy for the most part and I feel really good about where we are at going into the summer."

Those players contributing along the defensive front included Michael Wallace and Zach Rogers. The return of linebackers Gavin Burford (75 tackles), Paul Hammer and Curt Scherer should also help alleviate the losses on the defensive line.

Experience isn't as much of an issue in the secondary, however, where safety Preston Morgenstern and corner Cardell Lue return.

"We had a few minor changes defensively," Brazil said. "I think you're going to see us playing more man coverage in the secondary."

Offensively, C.J. Mexia returns off an all-district campaign to help anchor the line, while Rogers will also contribute offensively.

"We have C.J. and Zach back and I think we are going to be a lot bigger up front," Brazil said.

If the line continues to gel, Brazil believes Hebron's rushing attack could be dangerous. Dezmond Wortham, Braelen Evans and Jamal Adams bring the Hawks explosiveness and versatility at the running back position.

Austin Morgenstern, Travis Stone and others figure to be the top pass-catcher for quarterback Carson Proffitt.

"We have some key guys outside to replace as well," Brazil said. "But I think we'll have a pretty good group again. Our receivers really came on throughout the spring.

"We've made a few changes schematically, too. We're still going to run our two-back stuff and our two-back gun formations. But you're going to see us utilize the no-huddle more and really become more of an up-tempo team."

Thus far, Hebron's skill players have been showing their stuff in 7-on-7 competition. The Hawks qualified for state in their first tournament of the season May 26 at Frisco Liberty.
