Win, Lose or Draw: Lady Eagles pick up one of each at host tourney

Published: Wednesday, January 23, 2013 1:28 PM CST
The first two days of the three-day Allen Girls Soccer Showcase were frustrating for the Lady Eagles as they were unable to score a goal.

Those frustrations were taken out with a vengeance on Lake Highlands Saturday as Allen defeated the Lady Wildcats, 14-0, to finish their host event at 1-1-1.

"Goals kept coming like a London bus," said Kevin Albury, Allen head coach, "every few minutes."

Lake Highlands attempted to trap, but the Allen forwards outran them as the home team took an early lead off a pair of goals from senior Allie Johnson. That lead doubled by the half after scores from sophomore Jenny Price and freshman Kaylee Davis.

The scoring bonanza intensified in the second half.

"Lake Highlands only had 11 players," Albury said. "So those girls had to play every minute of their other games too and by this point I think they were just worn out."

There were no such concerns for Allen, which got its 10 second-half goals from six different players. Junior Bailey Beam scored the next two goals, a total that was matched by juniors Chloe Fowler, Madison Evans and sophomore Morgan Cherry. Cherry, who also notched three assists, put home the last goal to set the 14-0 final. Additional Lady Eagles' goals came from senior Madison Ledet and sophomore Miranda Morton.

That offensive output was a far cry from the opening two days of the event.

The Lady Eagles began the showcase Jan. 17 with a scoreless draw against Garland Lakeview Centennial despite a 20-2 shot advantage.

"We totally dominated that match and didn't score," Albury said. "I know the girls were a bit frustrated against a packed defense and strong goalie, but the top teams find a way to get the score and get that win."

Allen did neither despite good looks from Cherry, Johnson, senior Hailey Jensen and freshman Marissa Kinsey, who hit the post.

The Lady Eagles were also held scoreless Friday against Coppell at Eagle Stadium.

The Cowgirls, however, were not as they picked up the 1-0 victory off a goal from Tara Vishnesky in the 20th minute.

"We talk about speed of the game or how to manage the game a lot and this was a good example for us," Albury said. "Coppell took the lead and then really slowed the pace down and was able to keep possession, which is what we might see a lot of in district."

Though 10-5A play doesn't begin until Feb. 12, Allen is now moving into district mode as the past weekend was its last tournament.

The Lady Eagles started their new Tuesday-Friday rotation right with a 6-0 victory over Richardson on Tuesday night that was powered by goals from Cherry, Fowler, Jensen, Johnson, Kinsey and freshman Michaela Rouse. Allen is home again Friday, but shifts to Ford Middle School to host Frisco Wakeland at 7:15 p.m.

"We've used a lot of formations and girls trying to see what all we had, but the evaluation phase is over," Albury said. "Now we're going to start using our core players more and more and get into our practice routine for these Tuesday and Friday games."
