Newman Smith's football team dropped its first game of the season Friday as the Trojans lost to Lake Dallas, 28-14.
"We weren't the better team [Friday]," said Paul Ressa, Smith head coach. "We got outplayed."
Despite winning the turnover battle, the Trojans fell behind, 28-0, before scoring a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Smith quarterback Cole Brewer threw for 109 yards, including an 18-yard scoring pass to Garrett Browne, who had a team-high four receptions. Brewer also led the Smith rushing attack with 20 carries for 125 yards, while Andy Wordlaw had 10 rushes for 29 yards and a touchdown.
Smith has a bye this week before opening District 10-4A play at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at Mesquite Poteet.
Lions still looking for first win
Turner saw its record drop to 0-2 Friday as the Lions struggled in the first half of a 41-23 loss against Little Elm.
The Lobos gained a 41-10 halftime advantage before Turner outscored Little Elm in the second half, 13-0.
Trailing, 27-3, Turner's Taylor Freeman scored from 1-yard out to cut the Lobos lead to 27-10. However, Elm quickly regained the momentum with a 78-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jaylen Price.
In the fourth, the Lions scored on a 27-yard pass from Nick Landin to Jorge Lorta and on a 50-yard run by Mike Walters.
Freeman and Walters finished with 61 and 25 yards, respectively, while J.P. Patterson had a team-high 118 yards on 14 carries.
