10-4A BOYS BASKETBALL: West Mesquite ends Pirates' playoff hopes

It was a rough week for Poteet.
Just days after losing a pivotal fourth-place showdown to North Forney, West Mesquite ended the Pirates' playoff hopes on Tuesday with a 73-54 victory.
The Wranglers, who have clinched a playoff berth, improve to 9-3 in 10-4A and remain tied for second place with Highland Park. Both teams trail Carrollton Newman Smith (10-2) by one game with one week left in the regular season.
West Mesquite came out running, scoring 25 points in the opening quarter to take a double-digit lead.
The Wranglers used a strong push in the third, as well, pushing the advantage to 54-37 and the Pirates were unable to make a serious charge in the fourth.
Braylon Rayson had 27 points to lead all scorers, while teammate Tyrone Davis had a big game with 19 points. Verkedric Vaughns led a trio of Poteet players in double figures with 17 points. Nathaniel Gaines and Raffaele Gaines scored 14 and 11 points, respectively.
With two games left, the four playoff teams are separated by just two games as they jockey for postseason seeding.
Carrollton Newman Smith controls its own destiny and will clinch the top seed with victories over Poteet and Carrollton Creekview.
West Mesquite will be favored in games against Creekview and last-place Terrell. The biggest test for any of the top teams could come in the season finale on Tuesday when Highland Park hosts North Forney.
