Movie night

Generally when I write these Live & Local columns, I focus on the fun activities available to Frisco residents in and around the city. This time I'm not going to take that route.

As someone who drives about an hour -- if I'm lucky -- to and from work each day, I typically like to keep my weekends simple and do activities that don't require a whole lot of time.

Movies are one of the few activities that almost anyone can enjoy. They don't require much planning and after about two hours you'll be back in the confines of your own comfy home.

Now, I'm not saying activities around the city aren't fun. There are plenty of activities residents can take part in -- great restaurants, fun sporting events and lots of places to go shopping. But sometimes it's better to just relax.

Plus, the great thing about movies is it's much easier to ensure money isn't wasted. Want to attend something everyone in the family can enjoy? Then either see a family friendly movie or go to different movies at the same time. Want to see a well-rated movie? Check Rotten Tomatoes to see the aggregate review score.

It's not always a perfect method, but I'd wager the aggregate score of a movie with about a hundred reviews is more indicative of its quality than a restaurant's Yelp rating with 20 reviews.

With spring just beginning, many big-name movies are soon to be released, too. The summer months are typically full of blockbusters -- such as "Iron Man 3" on May 3, "Fast and Furious 6" on May 24 and "Man of Steel" on June 14.

Even if you don't want to go out and watch a movie, Netflix's Watch Instantly catalog is increasing at a rapid pace, with major motion pictures like "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" being added every day.

On Feb. 1, Netflix is releasing its exclusive "House of Cards" series, starring Kevin Spacey (a two-time Academy Award-winning actor) and directed by David Fincher (a two-time Academy Award nominee for best director), too. Although it's not a movie, all 13 episodes of the series are immediately available to watch at your leisure.

So why not kick back, relax and just go see a film every once and a while? It's easier than making an elaborate plan, waiting on your significant other to figure out what to wear and having to fight for a parking spot at big events.

Plus, if you're like me and are simply tired of driving to and from work every day, it's a well-deserved moment of relaxation.
