Boys basketball: Hebron still perfect in district, Lady Hawks in playoff hunt

Published: Tuesday, January 29, 2013 5:46 PM CST
After two-time reigning boys basketball Class 5A State Champion Marcus lost its entire senior group and saw its coaching staff leave for Duncanville, District 5-5A members were all smiles knowing the title was again up for grabs.

Or so they thought.

Instead Hebron has slid into Marcus' role, finishing the first half of district with a perfect 5-0 mark. The Hawks are looking to make it four consecutive seasons in which a team has gone unbeaten in district as they opened the second half of play Tuesday against second-place Flower Mound (results not available as of press time).

The Hawks had already secured a win over the Jaguars Jan. 11 (76-36) and doing the same Tuesday would give Hebron a stranglehold on the district title.

Hebron was coming off a week in which it defeated Denton Ryan comfortably (59-31) last Friday but had to hold off a feisty Coppell team on Jan. 22 (50-47).

Against the Cowboys, Ridge Shipley scored 22 points, while Simi Socks had 16 for the Cowboys.

Hebron led for the course of the game before holding off a 22-12 Coppell run in the fourth quarter.

Shipley also led the way against Ryan with 17 points, while Chase Mortenson and Tyler Williams chipped in nine apiece. Gilbert Jackson recorded 12 for the Raiders.

Hebron continues at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Lewisville and goes on the road at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Marcus.

Girls basketball: Lady Hawks in playoff hunt

Despite a rough week that saw the team drop a pair of games, the playoffs are still a possibility for Hebron's girls basketball team with three contests remaining.

The Lady Hawks (2-5) entered the week tied with Coppell for the fourth spot and one game ahead of Lewisville.

Hebron had a tough contest Tuesday against unbeaten-in-district Flower Mound (results not available as of press time) before closing the season at 6 p.m. Friday against Lewisville and at 6 p.m. next Tuesday at Marcus.

The Lady Hawks fell into a tie with the Cowgirls last Tuesday after being unable to secure a season-sweep with a 40-30 loss.

The squad followed by coming up short Friday against Denton Ryan (42-37).

Stephanie Mitchell scored 10 points against Ryan, who received 11 points apiece from Morgan Davis and Danielle Richardson.

Against the Cowgirls, leading scorers were Kristin Cunningham (11) for Hebron and Caitie Galvan (14) for Coppell.
