Kick off the Boots and Bling: Sunnyvale Education Foundation holds party to get ready for annual gala

Published: Thursday, February 14, 2013 6:03 PM CST
The Sunnyvale Education Foundation wants to get residents to boot scoot their way out to their kickoff party for the upcoming Boots and Bling annual gala.

The kickoff event for the annual gala will begin at 6 p.m. at Pinto Ranch in the North Park Centre on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Pinto Ranch is a Western décor store where customers can get their boots shined and hats shaped and browse a wide selection of western home décor. During the event, they can also brush up on their line-dancing skills while sampling complimentary hors d'oeuvres and drinks.

As the foundation continually tries to raise money to help keep Sunnyvale on the cutting edge of education, Pinto Ranch is joining in for the kickoff event and will donate 10 percent of proceeds to benefit the SEF. Residents interested in going should R.S.V.P. to Lesley Bond at 214-395-0671.

Linda Milton, SEF president, said the kickoff party at Pinto Ranch is a way to draw attention to the growing gala, which is to be held on April 6 at Eddie Deen's in downtown Dallas with a theme of "Boots and Bling."

Each year for the last eight, the gala has quickly outgrown the venue they were in the year before. Milton said this will be the first time they have done a gala of this size and they want to get the school district members excited with the kickoff event.

The foundation has come a long way from the backyard barbeques they held when they began 12 years ago. Milton said they are expecting more than 350 guests to buy tickets to this year's event. She said they hope even more will come out after the foundation announced country rocker Deryl Dodd will be the featured entertainment at this year's gala.

The mission of the foundation is to enrich student lives by providing funds for teaching grants and scholarships. Milton said last year, the foundation passed out $7,500 in scholarships. During the gala itself, a teacher from each school will be recognized as teacher of the year and will be awarded $500.

Through the gala and auction efforts, the foundation was able to pass out $32,000 in grants to teachers to help them in their efforts in educating Sunnyvale students. Milton said each year, the foundation is surprised by big donations - like the year before, when the Hope Charitable Foundation donated $5,000, or like this year, when Lisa and Rick Sheldon became the foundation's first-ever presenting sponsors with a $10,000 donation.

With donations like those, Milton said, the foundation hopes to raise more than $50,000 through this year's gala, which would meet last year's total.

"It all goes along with the transformation project that Superintendent [Doug] Williams is starting," Milton said. "We work in partnership with the district. They have seen what we can do and let us know that we enrich the lives of the students and teachers within the district."
