AARP volunteers offer free tax help to seniors

Published: Monday, February 18, 2013 9:09 AM CST
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are at various senior citizen centers and libraries in the area one day each week to offer senior citizens and others free help on preparing their income taxes.

The volunteers offer help with electronic filing. At some locations, appointments must be made while at others only walk-ins are accepted.

Don Vasquez of AARP said, “Some tax situations are out of scope and are excluded from this free service. Taxpayers must bring a photo ID, Social Security (or ITN) card for everyone on the tax return, current tax documents and records and a copy of their 2011 (last year’s) tax return.”

Vasquez said tax help is offered to taxpayers with low or moderate incomes, “with emphasis on those 60 and older.”

AARP tax-aide volunteers are now offering free tax help with electronic filing from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays through April 13 at the Coppell Senior and Community Center, located at 345 W. Bethel Road. No appointment is needed or taken.

AARP tax help is also offered at two locations in Carrollton and one each in Lewisville and Flower Mound.

In Carrollton, tax help is offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays at the Carrollton Senior Center, located at 1720 Keller Springs Road.
