No challengers yet for Mesquite council incumbents
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
Filing for the city elections has been under way since Jan. 30, and only incumbents are on the ballot. There are four places up for election this year: mayor, Place No. 1 representative, Place No. 2 representative and Place No. 6 representative.
The deadline to file a candidacy application is March 1.
John Monaco is seeking another term as the city's mayor. Monaco currently has no challenger for the position he has held since 2007. Monaco ran unopposed in 2011. He currently serves as president of the Texas Municipal League.
Al Forsythe currently represents Place No. 2. So far, Forsythe has not filed an application for re-election, and there is currently no candidate on the ballot for the Place No. 2 seat. City secretary Sonja Land said she has never seen an election where there were no candidates. The only person to be given a packet to for the Place No. 2 seat is Forsythe; the packet is automatically given to incumbents. The filing deadline is March 1.
Place No. 6 is represented by Dennis Tarpley, who has filed his application to seek another term. Tarpley was first elected to the city council in 2003. He is currently unopposed for his seat.
