Volleyball: Smith one win away from playoffs
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
With a win in one of its final two matches, Newman Smith's volleyball team will do something it hasn't accomplished since 2006: reach the playoffs.
The Lady Trojans (7-6) entered Tuesday's 10-4A finale against Mesquite Poteet one match ahead of the Lady Pirates (6-7), having already defeated Poteet in five sets in previous district action.
Thus, a win puts Smith in the postseason. A loss and the two squads would be right back at it competing in a play-in match at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Highland Park.
The Lady Trojans remain confident, however, after seeing an increase in production on the attack.
"Our defense has pretty much taken care of business and done its job," Gregory said. "We're getting 50 digs per night and are doing well there. But our offense has really been cranking it up. Our front line is getting about seven kills apiece per match and that is really making things easier for us. It's been a great team effort."
Smith also enters the finale with a healthy roster.
"We're ready," Gregory said. "We had a pretty good idea it was going to come down to this match. The girls are prepared and now it's a matter of just going out there and playing."
