Frisco Family Services is gearing up for another big fundraising year. A large part of that fundraising comes from the nonprofit's annual gala, which will take place from 6:30 p.m. to midnight April 27 this year.

The organization, which provides support programs and services in Frisco and Frisco ISD's communities, is hosting the gala for the 13th time in the past 12 years (in its first year, the organization hosted two galas). The event will feature live music, live and silent auctions, raffle ticket drawings, and other activities.

In addition to entertainment, the gala will feature catered food from several local restaurants, including One 2 One Restaurant & Bar, Kotta Sushi, Palio's Pizza Café, III Dimensional Catering/Baylor Medical Center, Rudy's Country Store & Bar-B-Q, Nothing Bundt Cake and Hooters. More restaurants are expected to announce their involvement in the coming weeks.

Melanie Perkins, director of development for the non-profit, said the event is about the local community coming together to help others.

"The funds we raise at this event come right back to our programs and services," she said. "We're facing big issues like hunger, homelessness and other urgent needs, so what we raise at this event will make a big impact on a lot of people."

Perkins said the nonprofit's special events -- including the gala -- made up about 13 percent of Frisco Family Service's total revenue last year.

Some of the services that revenue goes to include emergency financial assistance, food distribution and related services, back-to-school support for families, credit counseling, and adult education classes.

A dress recommendation is still being formulated, but Perkins said the event typically fosters a laid-back, casual atmosphere. This year the gala will feature a "feel of South Beach," Perkins said, including 8-feet-tall coy fish and mermaids and mermen who will pose for pictures.

Later this month the organization will hold a pre-gala mixer to prepare for the full event.

The mixer, which will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at Randy's Steakhouse, is open to anyone, although the nonprofit is asking those in attendance to bring a gift valued at $50 or greater to donate to the gala's silent auction.

Those who bring a gift will be entered for a chance to win a raffle ticket at the gala.

Raffle tickets typically cost $50, but Frisco Family Services will provide two for the cost of one during the month of February. The tickets can be placed in contention for one of two potential prizes -- a $10,000 Visa gift card or a 5-night stay at Fairmont Kea Lani Maui in Hawaii and airfare for two.

"We make the Frisco Family Services Gala fun. We have a great band, great items to bid on and an exciting live auction," Perkins said. "There are lots of things to see and do, and what makes it best of all is the cause. You can feel good about spending your money at the gala."

This year's gala is being presented by Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, but the nonprofit is still seeking more sponsors.

Tickets for the gala start at $125 per person for general admission and $150 for a reserved seat. To purchase tickets or inquire about sponsorship opportunities, call Perkins at 972-335-9495 or visit www.friscofamilyservices.org/gala.

Those who can't attend in person can also call the number listed above to provide donations.
