Sunnyvale girls, boys basketball teams stay alive in chase for district titles

Published: Saturday, January 26, 2013 11:20 PM CST
The Sunnyvale girls and boys basketball teams stayed in the hunt for the district championship by picking up victories over Van Alstyne on Friday.

The Raider girls improved to 22-5 and 9-1 in 12-2A with a 53-35 victory.

They trail undefeated Gunter, who is 9-0, by one-half game with a regular season-ending showdown on the slate for Feb. 5.

Sunnyvale, which is already playoff-bound, held Van Alstyne's offense in check in the first half, allowing them to open a 23-15 lead.

The Raiders then stepped on the pedal in the third quarter, outscoring Van Alstyne 21-11 to take a commanding 18-point lead.

Caila Sims had a big game for Sunnyvale with 24 points while Andi Morgan added nine. Hunter Offill and Carleigh Simmons each scored nine points for Van Alstyne.

The Raider boys were fresh off a victory over state-ranked Farmersville, and they nearly had a letdown before escaping with a 41-37 win.

Sunnyvale trailed for much of the game and saw that deficit swell to 31-22 going to the fourth quarter.

But the Raiders dug deep, closing on a 19-6 run to eke out the win. Sunnyvale came up big from the charity stripe, knocking down 17-of-23 attemps. Thomas Wendt led the way with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Josh Quinn had 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers and five-of-six shooting from the free throw line.

Zach Davis had a game-high 16 points for Van Alstyne.

The Sunnyvale teams will each face Leonard on Tuesday with big playoff implications.

The Raider girls need a win to keep its 12-2A title hopes alive and it will be facing a desperate Leonard team that is holding on to a one-game lead for the final playoff spot.

The Sunnyvale boys are tied with Leonard for second place with a 6-2 record, just one game off the pace of Farmersville (7-1). The winner of this game will get a leg up for second place, and possibly, a district championship, while the loser will fall back closer to the contending pack, which is currently led by Gunter (4-4).
