Four on the Floor: Allen, Nick Cobb win historic state titles

After dominating the Region II-5A Championships two weeks ago, but going a surprisingly mediocre 6-6 in the finals, Allen head coach Jerry Best promised, "we will do better," at the Class 5A State Wrestling Meet.
He wasn't kidding.
Not only did Allen win a fourth straight UIL State Championship on Saturday, it dominated in reaching that goal.
The Eagles left the Delco Center in Austin with a new state record for points scored (251.5); a total that more than tripled second place El Paso Franklin (79) and was higher than Allen's closest three challengers (Franklin, Flower Mound, Arlington Martin) combined.
The Eagles finished the feat Saturday with their state tournament-record seven finalists going 6-1 in their championship bouts.
Most notable among those victories was Nick Cobb, who became just the second grappler in UIL history (Amarillo Tascosa's Nick Herrmann) to win four individual state titles. Cobb completed the feat by defeating Rockwall's Daniel Roland, 5-2, in the finals of the 195-pound bracket.
Cobb's first state title came as a freshman in 2010. Allen's only other freshman to win their weight class that year was Oliver Pierce. The Oklahoma signee had been back to the state tournament each year since then, but Pierce (152) finally broke through with a second individual state championship as he pinned Arlington Bowie's Rafay Ali in 50 seconds.
Bo Nickal (160) was even quicker in Friday's semifinals as he pinned his opponent in 11 seconds. Nickal followed that up in the finals by defeating Flower Mound's Drake Dudley, 3-1.
Allen would win three more weights with Daniel Cartagena (138), Matt Meyer (170) and Stone Drulman (220) each climbing to the top of the podium. The lone finals loss for the Eagles came at 106 as Howard Smith was defeated by McKinney Boyd's Alex Minor, 8-7. Minor also beat Smith in the district and regional finals.
