WEEKEND ROUNDUP: MHS baseball posts 3-1 record, softball picks up two victories

Published: Tuesday, February 26, 2013 4:11 PM CST
Mesquite followed up a season-opening victory last Tuesday with an impressive performance at the Naaman Forest Tourament.

The Skeeters won three of their four games at the event, which was shortened to two days because of the rainy weather that hit the area on Thursday morning.

Mesquite's arms did the job for the most part, starting with the opener on Friday in which Trey Lablanc gave up only one run in a 4-1 victory over Naaman Forest. Rodney Jackson doubled to lead the offense.

Later in the day, Grant French threw a one-hitter as the Skeeters posted a 7-0 blanking of Skyline. French helped his own cause with a double at the plate, as Mesquite managed only four hits, but made the most of them.

The Skeeters returned to the field on Saturday with a 4-3 victory over Sachse. Dakota Taylor earnred the win on the mound while Daniel Ferra had a triple for one of the team's five hits.

Mesquite closed the tournament on a sour note, as W.T. White rolled to a 14-0 victory.

The Skeeter softball team posted a 2-3 record at the Mesquite ISD Invitational last week.

Mesquite split a pair of games on Friday. They got extra base hits from Selebrity Winegar and Kennedy Curry but it was not enough in a 10-5 loss to Mansfield Legacy.

Later in the day, the Skeeters pounded Duncanville in a 17-7 win. Lindy Kennedy picked up the victory on the mound, with Kelsi Coleman doubling and Curry adding a triple as part of a 15-hit attack.

Mesquite had an up-and-down day on Saturday. They opened with a 16-5 loss to Waxahachie. Coleman drove in two runs and Curry added a RBI as the Skeeters took a 5-3 lead early on, but they also hurt themselves with eight errors.

Mesquite put together one of its best performances of the season to date in a 10-3 victory over Garland. The Skeeters scored in each of the first five innings, including a four-run rally in the fifth that put the game away.

Kennedy went the distance on the mound, striking out five in six innings and adding a triple at the plate.

Coleman had a pair of hits and three RBIs, Krystal Johnson drove in a pair of runs and Lily Garza, Monica Rodriguez and Winegar all added runs batted in.

The Skeeters closed the tournament with a 12-2 loss to Sachse.
