The Poteet softball team nearly pulled off a clean sweep of its games at the Mesquite ISD Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The Pirates started strong with a 12-7 victory over Crandall. Cassie Vasquez picked up the win on the mound and also drove in a pair of runs. Tristan Wells doubled and had three RBIs, while Madison Yannetti had a triple and two runs batted in.
Later on Friday, Poteet turned to Madison Sadler, who struck out three in four innings as they claimed a 6-1 win against Mansfield Summit.
Shelby Wilson belted a two-run home run and Yannetti, Selena Mendoza and Courtney Evans all added extra-base hits for the Pirates.
On Saturday, Poteet edged Troup, 3-2, behind a strong outing from Vasquez. Wilson drove in two and Yannetti added three hits and a RBI as the Pirates held off a late Troup rally.
The Pirates' lone setback came in the tournament finale with a 5-2 loss to Mount Pleasant. Yannetti and Hannah Jobson knocked in the team's runs and Amy Krouse had three hits, but it was not enough.
The Poteet baseball team had an interesting series of results, winning one, losing one and tying two games at the Baylor Medical 1st Pitch Classic.
The Pirates picked up their first win of the season in the finale, edging Keller Central, 6-5 in eight innings. Connor Roberts and Trey Stone had two hits each, Chase Coronado doubled and Matt Hecht came on in relief to pick up the victory.
Earlier on Saturday, Poteet fell to Mansfield in a 4-1 loss. Roberts again had two hits and Angel Rodriguez had a double, but they were only able to manage the single run.
The Pirates battled to a pair of ties on Friday. Rodriguez reached base four times in a 6-6 draw with Plano West. Brett Boone drove in a pair of runs in a 3-3 tie against Waxahachie.
