Close again: Late-game magic ends for Lady Bobcats

Published: Wednesday, February 27, 2013 3:35 PM CST
Close games have become the staple of Celina’s postseason run.

The Lady Bobcats needed overtime in two of their first three playoff games and prevailed each time to earn a trip to Friday’s regional semifinals at Texas A&M-Commerce University. However, that late-game magic ended Friday as Pittsburg defeated Celina, 41-36, in another close affair.

“We didn’t play too great,” said Jordan Davis, Celina head coach. “Pittsburg did a good job of throwing us out of what we do.”

Pittsburg stormed out to a 24-15 lead at the break, but Celina clawed its way back into contention and trimmed the deficit to one point late in the fourth quarter.

“I was proud of how hard the girls played all the way through,” Davis said.

The Lady Bobcats couldn’t continue their winning ways and eventually saw the one-point deficit swell to five points before the final buzzer. However, Celina had several chances to capture the lead in the late going.

“[Close games] have been quite the theme from this postseason,” Davis said. “We just dug too big of a hole early on to overcome.”

Sophomore guard Alex Jones led the way for Celina with a team-high 14 points. The point guard scored in double figures in three of Celina’s four postseason games.

“[Jones] grew up as the season went along,” Davis said. “Being a sophomore and the point guard is a tough task, but she always answered.”

The Lady Bobcats were outdone in the second quarter, as Pittsburg used a 13-5 run to build a safe lead entering the locker room. Davis said the drought ultimately paved the way for Pittsburg’s victory.

“We couldn’t get anything going [during the second quarter],” she said. “Nothing really rolled our way. It was frustrating to deal with.”

Junior guard Sarah Cantu added 12 points for Celina, while sophomore forwards KJ Stastny and Kynese Davis chipped in 7 and 3, respectively.

The loss puts the team’s final season mark at 28-7. With no seniors to lose, Celina will return its entire squad next season with added experience from back-to-back lengthy playoff runs.

“That’s a very positive thing for us to look at,” Davis said. “Returning everybody is a good problem to have.”

Aside from returning the same roster for another run, next season will feature senior experience for the first time since the team’s Class 3A State Championship berth in 2012.

“It’s going to make them that much tougher next year,” Davis said.
