Charger boys claim tournament championship, top seed in TAPPS playoffs

Published: Sunday, February 17, 2013 7:08 PM CST
While a majority of the teams in TAPPS 2-4A spent the week battling for their playoff lives, Dallas Christian got to sit back and relax until Saturday night.

That was the luxury the Charger boys earned by running through the regular season district slate undefeated to earn the top seed in the 2-4A tournament.

When it came time to return to the court, Dallas Christian was ready, earning the top seed in the upcoming TAPPS Class 4A playoffs with a 69-62 victory over Trinity Christian-Cedar Hill on Saturday at Wildcat Arena in Whitehouse.

The Chargers (17-1) will have a first-round bye and will face the winner of the game between district foe Tyler All Saints and Grapevine Faith Christian next week.

The match-up against TC-Cedar Hill, the second seed in the tournament, was the rematch of a game won by Dallas Christian just a little over a week ago.

It was not easy, but the Chargers, behind 20 points each from Hayden Baker and Cameron Martin and 10 from Alex Craig, were able to win the rematch, as well.

They held on to a slim 32-30 lead at halftime but pushed the advantage to 49-43 through three quarters and they hit their free throws down the stretch.

Albert Owens scored 20 points and Charles Williams added 12 for TC-Cedar Hill.

The Dallas Christian girls were hoping to win a district championship of their own, but instead, it was Tyler T.K. Gorman who rallied to claim their fifth straight 2-4A title with a 68-56 victory on Saturday.

The Chargers (21-13) looked rested and ready to pull the upset as they opened the game on a 17-7 run.

But T.K. Gorman (29-3) rallied back behind 37 points from Michelle Obach, outscoring Dallas Christian 47-21 through the middle quarters to take control.

Hunter Cauley had 14 points to lead a quartet of Chargers in double figures. Melanie Johnson scored 11 points while Ashlan Miles and Lexi Poynor each added 10.

Dallas Christian will be the second seed in the playoffs and after enjoying a bye in the first round, will play later next week.
