Boys basketball: Carroll enters playoffs hot

Published: Tuesday, February 19, 2013 5:45 PM CST
The District 4-5A basketball season has been full of streaks for Southlake Carroll.

The Dragons just hope they are on a hot one at the right time.

Carroll (8-6) entered Tuesday's bi-district round contest against Arlington Martin (results not available as of press time) winners of three consecutive games to finish in a tie for third with Justin Northwest for the final playoff spots, one game in front of Keller Fossil Ridge (7-7).

Carroll also had a four-game losing skid and a four-game winning streak in district before again getting hot late.

"We feel good about where we are at," said Eric McDade, Carroll head coach. "The kids have been working hard and have a great attitude."

Carroll's ability to get hot was on display last Tuesday when the Dragons secured a 70-49 win over Timber Creek.

After falling behind in the first quarter, 13-7, the Dragons used a 19-0 spurt early in the second to gain control before putting the contest away in the third, where they held a 29-13 margin.

"We did a very good job of being patient but still pushing the tempo," McDade said. "And we're doing a very good job with our bench rotation. We believe in everyone on the roster and each player has been fulfilling their role and contributing."

On Tuesday, it was Daniel Brown who led the way with 23 points, while Brett Jolly contributed 14 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

"Brett was great and has really stepped it up," McDade said. "We need to keep our focus on defense and rebounding and he has been a big part of that."

The Carroll defense could have its hands full against a Martin team that finished second to North Crowley in District 3-5A.

"It's going to be a fresh look for us," McDade said. "But we have a scouting report on them and we feel prepared. Martin has solid offensive players inside but they also have some really gifted perimeter players. It's going to be a challenge because they are very patient and versatile."

Martin runs a motion offense combined with a tough man-to-man defense.

"It's a pretty traditional style of basketball," McDade added.

The Dragons are hoping to eliminate Martin in the first round of the playoffs, just as the Dragons football team did back in November.
