With heavyweight DeSoto out of the mix, Mesquite and Horn assumed the top spots in 12-5A boys and girls basketball this season.
Despite dropping both head-to-head meetings, the Skeeters claimed the district title over the Jaguars, who beat Longview in a seeding game to finish second.
The opposite was true on the girls side, where Horn reeled off 11 consecutive district victories to claim the 12-5A championship by one game over Mesquite.
Mesquite's Alex Cooper and Horn's Anthony Sharp shared 12-5A co-player of the year honors.
Cooper, who also captured district most valuable player honors for the Skeeter football team in the fall, did a little bit of everything once he joined the basketball squad six games into the season.
Cooper averaged 18 points, including 2.3 treys per game. He also pulled down 4.2 rebounds and dished out 4.3 assists per contest.
Sharp was one of the most dangerous scorers in the area and one of few players who could single-handedly take over a game.
Mesquite's Brianna Williams claimed the girls 12-5A most valuable player honor. The senior led the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game. She also averaged 2.4 assists and was one of the team's top defenders.
The district champion Jaguars captured three superlative awards. Junior Lauren Bradshaw was named defensive player of the year, although she could perform at both ends of the floor, averaging 8.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per contest.
Freshman Jada Underwood made an immediate splash with her nine points and 6.5 rebounds per game and was honored as newcomer of the year.
Kasie Brewer, in her first year with the Horn program, was named coach of the year after leading the team to a 25-7 recofrd, the 12-5A title and a trip to the regional quarterfinals.
Brian Curts took home the top coaching honors on the boys side as the district champion Skeeters went 22-11 and made it to the area finals before a heartbreaking last-second loss to Richardson.
Two other MISD boys players received superlative awards. Horn's Adrian Chevis was named co-newcomer of the year while co-defensive player of the year honors went to North Mesquite's Mike Williams, who also lead the team in scoring this season.
Among the first-team selections were Mesquite's Rashard Higgins (10.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg) and Davion Keys (6.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg), Horn's 6-6 post Zach Charles and North Mesquite's Norman Alexander (11.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg).
The girls' first team honorees included Horn's Tyler Hamilton, who led the district with 5.4 assists per game, and Kristina Smith (11.9 ppg), and Mesquite's Briana Caro (11.2 ppg, 78 3-pointers) and Viershanie Latham (7.9 rpg).
There were a few superlative award winners from non-MISD teams. Rockwall's Sarah Williamson was named 12-5A offensive player of the year.
On the boys team, Tyler Lee's Tayor Tankersley was tabbed offensive player of the year, Longview's Jordan Whitaker earned co-defensive player of the year and Rockwall-Heath's Tyler Zivney was honored as co-newcomer of the year.
