Mesquite's 2013 debut was a successful one as the Skeeters posted a 4-2 victory over Frisco Heritage on Tuesday at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco.
Daniel Ferra picked up where he left off last year, holding Wakeland to just three hits to pick up the win, with Dakota Taylor coming on late to earn the save.
Taylor was also one of the heroes at the plate as he belted a home run. Carlos Chavez and Julian Rios added doubles as part of an eight-hit attack.
The Skeeters will be back in action at the Naaman Forest Tournament starting on Thursday.
Other local teams were not as fortunate in their season openers.
Horn also played at Dr. Pepper Ballpark on Tuesday, but it was on the opposite end of a 12-2 final against Frisco Centennial. Bryan McCoy had a double, but it was one of only three hits for the Jaguars, who will go in search of their first victory on Thursday at the DeSoto/Cedar Hill Tournament.
On Monday, both Poteet and West Mesquite dropped their season openers. The Pirates were unable to keep up with South Grand Prairie in a 15-3 loss. Trey Stone had an extra base hit for Poteet, but it was one of just four in the game.
The Wranglers could not generate enough offense in a 4-1 loss to Greenville. West Mesquite had only one hit in the game and could not take advantage of a solid pitching performance by David Salazar, who struck out three and allowed only one earned run in six innings.
Poteet will play in the Baylor Medical 1st Pitch Classic this week, while West Mesquite will compete in the Bryan Adams Tournament.
Rowlett is slated to be in the field at the Russell Athletic North Texas Classic, while Sachse will join Mesquite at the Naaman Forest Tournament.
