SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Poteet with strong start, not so memorable finish in tournament action

Published: Sunday, February 17, 2013 8:07 PM CST
Poteet got off to just the start it wanted to with a pair of victories at the Mansfield ISD Tournament last Thursday.

As for the rest of the weekend, those games will serve as learning experiences for the future for the Pirates, who finished with a 2-3 record at the event.

Poteet opened strong with a 7-2 victory over Haltom. Cassie Vasquez scattered eight hits, giving up only two runs in five innings and she got plenty of support from the offense.

Madison Yannetti went 2-for-2, including a triple, Selena Mendoza had two hits and six different players drove in runs.

Later on Thursday, Madison Sadler allowed just two hits and an unearned run to lead the Pirates to a 5-1 victory over The Colony.

Poteet took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Yannetti scored on a double from Shelby Wilson, but the Cougars tied it in the bottom of the frame with their unearned run.

The Pirates responded immediately, though, as Yannetti had a two-run double as part of a four-run rally in the top of the fourth that proved to be the difference in the game.

There were fewer highights in the remainder of Poteet's games.

The Pirates returned to the field on Friday but could not get their bats going in an 8-2 loss to Mansfield. Yannetti had a home run, but that was one of only four hits. The defense did not help the cause with five errors.

The cold hitting continued into Saturday, as Poteet was blanked in losses to Denton Guyer (11-0) and Keller Timber Creek (8-0).

The Pirates are scheduled to play at Prosper on Tuesday and then compete in the Mesquite ISD Tournament on Thursday through Saturday.

They will be joined at the MISD event by fellow city teams Mesquite, North Mesquite and Horn.

The Skeeters got off to a 1-3 start at the Mansfield ISD Tournament, picking up a 10-0 win over Mansfield Lake Ridge, but suffering losses to Hebron, Azle and The Colony.

Mesquite will also play at Carrollton R.L. Turner on Tuesday.

Horn split a pair of games on Thursday at the Forney/North Forney Tournament and will return to Forney for a non-district game on Tuesday.

North Mesquite is slated to play Duncanville on the road on Tuesday.

West Mesquite, the lone team not to play at the MISD Tournament, posted a 2-1 record at the Highland Park Scot Classic last week. The Wranglers will play at Lakeview on Tuesday and then compete in the Scurry-Rosser Tournament starting on Thursday.
