Mesquite had been one of the hottest teams in the area entering the girls basketball playoffs.
But Lakeview, which itself was coming off a loss in its regular season finale, paid no heed to the Skeeters' streaking ways.
The Patriots overcame an early deficit and eventually outlasted Mesquite in double overtime for a 62-61 victory on Monday in a Class 5A bi-district playoff game at Royse City High School.
The Skeeters (21-12) appeared to be in good shape early on. They grabbed the first-quarter lead and then held Lakeview to five points in the second quarter to take a 29-22 advantage into halftime.
But the Patriots (17-15) refused to go away, reeling off a 15-5 spurt in the third quarter to take a three-point lead.
Mesquite was able to regroup in the fourth to tie the game at 48-48 and the teams remained deadlocked at 55-55 at the end of the first overtime.
It stayed tight through the second extra period, but at the end, one point was the difference between Lakeview moving on and the Skeeters going home.
Brianna Williams shouldered the offensive load for Mesquite with 27 points. Viershanie Latham added 15 points and Briana Caro chipped in with 10.
Daja Chase had a huge game for the Patriots with 32 points, getting support from Whitney Edwards with 10.
