LISD announces 2013 National Merit finalists

Published: Friday, March 1, 2013 4:42 PM CST
Lewisville Independent School District (LISD) has announced 72 high school students who were recently named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP).

With 42 finalists, Flower Mound High School (FMHS) has the second largest number of award winners in the state. There are 16 from Marcus High School, 12 finalists from Hebron High School, four from Lewisville High School and two from The Colony High School.

About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2013 National Merit

Scholarship Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying

Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

To become a finalist, the semifinalist and their high school must submit a detailed scholarship application in which they provide information about the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and honors and awards received. A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

From approximately 16,000 semifinalists, about 15,000 advance to the finalist level. All NMSP winners are selected from this group of finalists. Merit scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

The following pages list this year’s finalists by high school. These students represent less than one-half of one percent of the nation’s high school seniors.

“Congratulations to our merit finalists for achieving such an honor,” said Dr. Stephen Waddell, LISD superintendent. “Their determination and hard work to be the best will lead them to enjoy thriving and productive lives in a future they create.”

Beginning in March and continuing to mid-June, the National Merit Scholarship Committee selects approximately 8,300 finalists to receive a Merit Scholarship® award. Merit Scholarship awards are of three types: National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards and College-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards.
