Poteet boys claim team title at Ben Robertson Relays

Published: Wednesday, February 27, 2013 2:07 AM CST
Poteet won three relays and claimed two individual events to win the boys team title at the Ben Robertson Relays on Saturday at E.H. Hanby Stadium.

The Pirates finished with a total of 100 points, which put them well ahead of second-place Pearce, which had 82. North Mesquite took fourth place with 75 points.

On the girls side, Kaufman's total of 98 points was enough to edge Rockwall-Heath by a single point for the team title. Sachse was fourth with 74 points, followed by North Mesquite in fifth (64) and West Mesquite in eighth (18).

BOYS

Poteet has a proud cross country tradition and that often carries over well into long-distance events in the track and field season.

The team of Prosper Biyeh, Cody Dziak, Carlos Nuno, Steeven Martinez and Sulaiman Noor took first place in the 4x1,600 relay. Dziak, Biyeh, Nuno and Roberto Vallejo also teamed to win the distance medley.

The Pirates' other relay win came in the 1,600 sprint relay, where James Swindle, Marquise Banks, Jamie Tolliver and Martinez crossed the finish line first.

Poteet's A.J. Derry won the triple jump with a mark of 40-06, which was just enough to edge teammate Malik Jefferson by one inch.

In the high jump, the Pirates' Jarrett Ingram took first after clearing 6-02, while teammate Tyler Perkins was third.

Poteet also finished third in three other relays to help boost their team total.

North Mesquite won three individual titles, including a sweep of the four top spots in the shot put where Michael Nichols took first place and Aaron Akens was second.

Akens also won the discus, with Nichols placing third, while Savon Sanders won the long jump with a mark of 19-09.25.

The Stallions also got a boost from Kendrick McCullum, who was second in the high jump, and Tavoris Smith, who took third in the triple jump.

GIRLS

Sachse got three top-three finishes in relay events and a win from Michelle Chukwujekwu in the long jump to place fourth overall in the standings.

The team of Paige Jones, Jennifer Medlock, Morgan Lacy, Chukwujwkwu, Zuri Sheppard and Jasmine Meyers was third in the 400 relay.

Medlock, Lacy, Kimari Jones, Chukwujekwu, Meyers and Andrea Foster took third in the 800 relay, while Jones, Zana Mathis, Chukwujekwu and Foster were the runner-up in the 1,600 relay.

Madison Wood also picked up an individual gold medal for the Mustangs by winning the shot put with a throw of 32-07.25.

North Mesquite had a pair of relay teams finish second in their respective events.

The team of Taylor Ray, Tyree Brown, J'Lah Copeland, Van Dunn and Moria Evans finished just three-tenths of a second behind Rockwall-Heath in the 400 relay. Arian Spears, Mikaela Jones, Janie Gonzalez, Lilly Davilla and Karen Calderon took second in the distance relay.

The Stallions also picked up points in the triple jump, where Brown placed second and Ray was third.

Michaela Hubbard provided one of the highlights for West Mesquite by taking third in the discus.
