Reliable as they come: Eagles sweep Richardson track meet

Published: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 11:30 AM CDT
It was almost symbolic that the Allen track and field team competed at the Reliable Chevrolet Relays in Richardson on March 7.

Fitting in that six weeks into the season, the Eagles have been as reliable as it gets with top-three team finishes in every meet thus far. That trend held form at Eagle-Mustang Stadium where Allen swept the field for a pair of meet victories.

"It's always good to win one," said Larry Halliburton, Allen girls head coach. "We're running really well right now, not only in our sprints but the kids in the distance races are also scoring points for us."

The Eagles cruised to victory on the boys side (186 points), well ahead of second-place Highland Park (103.66). The Lady Eagles (159) enjoyed a comfy margin in their win as well, distancing themselves from Richardson Berkner (105).

Allen placed top three in all but 10 of the meet's 34 total events.

The Allen boys and girls placed in the top three 12 times each and raked in 13 total first-place finishes on the afternoon. Seven of those wins were procured on the boys side and primarily on the track, where the Eagles' short-distance speed made the difference. Chad Adams proved as much, racing to first in the 100-yard dash (10.78) while Cameron Hartsfield followed suit in the 200 (22.31). The two also teamed with Mayomi Olootu and Cory Miller for first in the 800 relay (1:30.11).

Gilson Umunnakwe added first in the 400 (50.55) and also ran the trail leg of Allen's winning 1,600 relay (3:23.13) alongside Dexter Lee, Evan Jones and Grant Finney.

Joe Miller and Alex Hintze commandeered the Eagles' efforts in the field events, with the former placing first in the high jump (6-02) and the latter doing the same in the pole vault (13-00).

A sprint-heavy onslaught was the plan for the Lady Eagles as well, largely thanks to Kennedy Knight who scampered to first in both the 100 (12.08) and 200 (25.55), while Taylor Dunlap placed first in the 400 (58.46) and Deonca Bookman topped out in the 300 hurdles (45.92).

"I just hope [Knight] stays healthy and keeps running the way she's been running," Halliburton said. "She's been doing a great job for us."

Ericka May and Kiyana Dixon rounded out the efforts with first-place finishes in the high jump (5-04) and triple jump (38-06 1/2), respectively.

In the midst of Spring Break, the Eagles will resume their season March 22 for their host meet, the Eagle Relays. The event kicks off at 2 p.m. from the Track Stadium.

"We're feeling pretty good," Halliburton said. "As long as we stay healthy and everybody keeps working hard, I think we'll be fine when the postseason starts."
